Town of Devon Position Description
Title of Position : Summer Parks Operator
The Seasonal Parks Labourer is responsible for the daily maintenance and care of outdoor open spaces throughout the Town of Devon. This includes mowing, string trimming, shrub bed and horticulture maintenance, garbage control, washroom upkeep, and general park support.
Seasonal Labourers operate a variety of hand tools and powered equipment to complete their work safely and efficiently. They also support Town of Devon events as needed and contribute to keeping parks clean, welcoming, and safe for all residents and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Parks & Grounds Maintenance
Perform mowing, string trimming, watering flowers, and shrub bed upkeepComplete routine inspections of park spaces, amenities, and infrastructureConduct washroom janitorial duties, including cleaning, restocking, and opening / closing facilitiesRemove litter and recycling from parks, trails, and open spacesAssist with event space cleanup when requiredSupport general beautification efforts across parks and green spacesTree & Horticulture Support
Assist with basic tree maintenance under staff directionSupport horticulture activities such as planting, watering, mulching, pruning, and garden bed careIdentify hazards or maintenance needs and report them promptlyEquipment Operation & Care
Safely operate motorized and manual equipment, including :String trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, water pumps, leaf blowers, cordless drills, and other power toolsHand tools such as rakes, shovels, hammers, wrenches.Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic mechanical checks, including monitoring fuel, oil, and fluid levelsReport equipment issues and ensure tools are maintained and stored safelyInspect, identify, and report worksite hazards in accordance with provided training and provincial safety regulationsWork safely with WHMIS-controlled substances, WHMIS knowledge is an assetAssist with insect and pest control activities under supervisionMaintain clean and safe work areas, addressing hazards promptlyCustomer Service & Public Interaction
Interact politely and respectfully with the public while working in parks and open spacesAssist Town staff with setup, takedown, and operational support for community eventsRepresent the Town of Devon in a professional and courteous manner at all timesQualifications
Specialized Skills / Knowledge :
Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditionsComfortable using both manual and power tools and learning new equipmentStrong attention to detail, especially related to field safety and playability standardsAbility to follow direction, work independently, and collaborate with the Parks teamBasic mechanical understanding for equipment checks and troubleshootingEducation & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent preferredExperience in parks maintenance, groundskeeping, sport field preparation, or outdoor labour considered an assetValid Class 5 driver’s license, with the ability to drive Town vehicles as requiredWHMIS certification considered an assetWorking Conditions
