GRPH-1001 Design Process 1 (1 credit)
FALL 2024 : 9 / 4 / 2024 – 12 / 3 / 2024; In-Person)
This course runs twice a week in the following configuration :
COURSE DESCRIPTION : Design Process 1 is an introductory sequence of experiences that begins to address the operations and conditions of the communication designer as a relationship between tools, techniques, process, decisions, and knowledges. Projects include experimentations with visual systems, empirical research, and programming which are experienced through approaches to making visual form. Design is engaged as a process through visual experimentation, exploration, and iteration. This foundational course fosters connections between making, looking, and thinking as design-specific skills. Two-dimensional project work using both hand and digital techniques are developed alongside reflective writing relating to specific practices such as colour, drawing, materiality, photography, and typography.
GRPH-1002 Design Process 2 (1 credit)
WINTER 2025 : 1 / 9 / 2025 – 4 / 25 / 2025; In-Person)
This course runs twice a week in the following configuration :
COURSE DESCRIPTION : Design Process 2 further develops the foundational activities, languages, tools, and techniques from Design Process 1 by engaging in practices related to form / space, information analysis, and sequential narrative. Projects require considerations of visual communication as a social and cultural activity that reflects and responds to the past, the present, and to future contexts. Process-based learning uses technical and analytical methods necessary for more independent learning in the upper years. Competences in three-dimensional, time-based, and print media are explored through a series of investigations that incorporate visual form, typography, colour, image, student intent, and reflective writing components to create purposeful work.
RESPONSIBILITIES : Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to : participation in curriculum coordination meetings (3x per term), course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, rubric and written-comment based assessment, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations / reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with salary level of $6,871.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
