Work Model : Primarily Remote (Edmonton attendance as required)
Project Overview
The Government of Alberta (GoA) is transforming how government services are delivered—making them simpler, more secure, and more accessible for Albertans in the digital age. The Digital Design and Delivery Division (DDD) serves as the Province’s centre of excellence for modern digital delivery, leveraging human-centred design, Agile methodologies, and modern data practices to deliver high-quality digital services at scale.
Within DDD, the Platforms Branch is responsible for building and maintaining enterprise platforms that support identity and access management, payments, and e-commerce services. These platforms underpin critical government services and must meet the highest standards for security, reliability, and scalability.
DDD is seeking one (1) Senior DevOps Specialist to support and lead DevOps operations across multiple large-scale, enterprise Agile initiatives.
Role Summary
The Senior DevOps Specialist plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and operating secure, scalable, and resilient cloud infrastructure that supports enterprise digital services. Working closely with development teams, quality assurance, security, and platform leadership, the DevOps Specialist ensures reliable CI / CD pipelines, high system availability, and compliance with provincial security and regulatory standards.
This role requires strong hands-on DevOps expertise, a deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and automation, and the ability to operate effectively within Agile, user-centred delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
DevOps & Infrastructure Leadership
Design, implement, and maintain automated CI / CD pipelines that enable frequent, low-risk deployments.
Lead infrastructure and operational reviews to ensure solutions meet security, compliance, and performance standards.
Apply DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices to reduce technical debt and improve system reliability.
Operations & Production Support
Lead operations for digital services in production, including :
Environment configuration and credential management
Database upgrades, migrations, backups, and recovery processes
Planned maintenance and release activities
Monitor system health, performance, and security, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
Automation & Tooling
Develop scripts, tools, and processes to :
Automate environment provisioning for development and testing
Enable observability through monitoring, logging, and telemetry
Support disaster recovery, scalability, and performance optimization
Agile Delivery Support
Support delivery teams with :
Early and continuous integration testing
Security scanning and performance / load testing
Incremental releases, including Alpha and Beta launches
Collaborate within Agile / Scrum teams to improve delivery efficiency and effectiveness.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
Maintain DevOps artifacts, operational documentation, and technical standards.
Continuously adopt and promote DevOps best practices across teams.
Senior DevOps Specialist
Frontend : React, React Native, TypeScript
Backend : .NET / .NET Core, C#
Cloud & Infrastructure : Microsoft Azure, Azure App Services, RedHat OpenShift
Databases : MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB
DevOps & Tooling : GitHub, BuildMaster
Collaboration : Microsoft Teams
Work Arrangement
Primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings or work sessions in Edmonton upon reasonable notice.
Travel time and expenses to Edmonton are not reimbursed.
The Province reserves the right to adjust work arrangements with reasonable notice.
Facilities & Equipment
Remote workers must supply their own computing equipment.
The Province will provide required system access and credentials.
If working on-site, office space and supplies will be provided; computing equipment remains the contractor’s responsibility.
Security Requirements
Criminal Record Check required upon request.
Enhanced Security Clearance required for Justice-related work.
Higher-level clearances (e.g., RCMP Top Secret) may be required during the contract term.
Final acceptance is subject to successful completion of all required security clearances.
Mandatory Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Required Experience
5+ years with Azure RedHat OpenShift
5+ years using BuildMaster
5+ years in :
Disaster recovery architectures and testing
Performance monitoring and troubleshooting
Environment replication and configuration management
Horizontal and vertical scaling strategies
VM sizing and performance testing
2+ years :
Supporting cloud-based and mobile applications
Working as a DevOps Specialist on large-scale enterprise Agile teams
Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Experience
Incremental modernization of large legacy systems
Experience within Government of Alberta or similar public-sector environments
Use of AI-assisted DevOps tools
Experience in large national or global organizations
