Unit Summary

Digestive Diseases Clinic are clinics within the ambulatory care program, McMaster University Medical Center. The clinic provides care to adult patients from the greater Hamilton area and specialist consultations for Ontario patients referred from beyond the Hamilton area. The clinic focuses on a multidisciplinary assessment with the participation of gastroenterologists, GI fellows and dieticians and with access to other medical specialties to provide a more comprehensive understanding of gastrointestinal diseases and its consequences for patient health. The Digestive Disease Clinic works closely with various associations including but not limited to the Canadian Celiac Association (CCA) and the North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (NASSCD) to further educate patients and their families and it aims to become a hub for educational activities within the medical and lay communities. Position Summary

As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Dietitian will have a key role in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal conditions including gluten related disorders and hosts specialty clinics for celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease & ulcerative colitis), intestinal failure and home parenteral nutrition (HPN). Affiliated with the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute (FFDHRI) at McMaster University, is home to some of the top gastroenterology clinicians and researchers in Canada and the world. The dietitian will collaborate in a formal nutrition initiative in an academic, research-based, ambulatory gastroenterology clinic, involving innovative diet and nutrition assessments, the use of indirect calorimetry and the exploration of nutrition behaviors. The successful applicant will have a key role in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal conditions including gluten-related disorders and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), delivering in-depth education related to nutrition assessment, evaluating nutritional needs and expenditure and advising patients regarding specific nutritional interventions such as gluten-free (GFD) and low fermentable carbohydrate (low FODMAPs) diets. The dietitian will participate collaboratively with gastroenterologists, subspecialty gastroenterology nutrition fellows, a clinical research coordinator and a clinical psychologist, amongst others.

Schedule Work Hours

Full-time position Monday to Fridays.

This position is temporary until September 2026.

Qualifications

1. Current Registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario or eligibility for registration

2. Membership of Dietitians of Canada required

3. Minimum 2 years (within the last 5 years) of clinical experience; knowledge and experience in the management of celiac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases is an asset

4. Collaboration in previous research studies and publications is an asset

5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels of hospital personnel, patients and families

6. Demonstrated ability to be creative, flexible, self-directed, proactive and resourceful

7. Responsible for professional growth and skill development relevant to this specialized facet of nutrition

8. Individual counseling and group counseling experience preferred
