The Ministry is seeking a results-oriented Area Wildlife Ecologist to join their Fish and Wildlife Branch in Prince Albert (or Regina). This is for a 12-month term position with the possibility of an extension for an additional 12 months. If you are a highly-motivated, proactive, self-directed individual who enjoys working collaboratively internally and with external rightsholders and stakeholders, this position will be of interest to you. In this position, you will be the Branch field contact responsible for coordinating and communicating sustainable, integrated wildlife management programming in a multi-use landscape within the Boreal Shield region of Saskatchewan.
This position collaborates with a variety of internal and external partners in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of wildlife management programs and policies that are integrated into a provincial framework. In this position, you will provide information and advice to government, business, industry and the public on wildlife management and terrestrial habitat issues. The successful candidate may review industrial development proposals and environmental impact assessments for their effects on wildlife habitats and populations. In addition, this position guides the management of black bear and barren-ground caribou in the province by compiling the best-available biological, social and economic information into recommendations for future harvest opportunities that balance the needs of all people interested in wildlife in Saskatchewan. Further, the position has a supportive role in the broader government programming on woodland caribou. The successful candidate will also be the Wildlife Unit point person for any questions or concerns the public may have about these species.
Knowledge of current wildlife management trends, issues and users in Saskatchewan is critical to the success of the position, and the successful candidate will be comfortable engaging with people from all backgrounds with an interest in wildlife. The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of biological and ecological requirements of a variety of wildlife species as well as wildlife science theory and practices / trends as they pertain to game species.
This position works remotely as part of an integrated provincial wildlife management unit and the successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively in a team environment. The preferred candidate for this position will have a Master’s of Science degree in the biological sciences, supplemented with several years of directly related, wildlife management experience and experience working with a variety of stakeholders on complex, and sometimes contentious, issues.
The ability to conduct public engagement, travel for and participate in field-related activities (including aerial surveys), and attend meetings is required.
