THE OPPORTUNITY :  PRESIDENT & CEO

The President & CEO (“President”) is responsible to the Board of Governors for the provision of innovative leadership and strategic direction to all aspects of the academic and administrative affairs of the College. The President advises the Board and recommends actions to address both current and emerging issues in the field of post-secondary education, and to ensure the College’s policies and programs result in the attainment of the long-term goals and objectives of the Board.

The College is philosophically committed to providing relevant, responsive, and quality educational and training opportunities in the East Kootenays. The President would be expected to lead strategic planning and operational practices that are constantly scrutinized and revised to meet this primary objective, and to challenge each individual to contribute to the institution’s success.

This is an exciting time in the East Kootenays and at College of the Rockies, and the President will play a vital role as a change and innovation leader, to achieve the College’s strategic objectives—student experience, employee experience, and community engagement. They will work with employees, students, local businesses, Indigenous partners, and the wider communities to ensure access to high-quality, responsive and relevant post-secondary education to ensure the region is well provided with the skilled workforce it needs to thrive.

The President should be experienced in fostering thriving, respectful, and inclusive organizational cultures and have a passion for engaging with students, employees, and community in pursuit of that goal. With a refreshed Strategic Plan defining a clear path forward, continued collaboration with the region’s Indigenous communities, and a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, the President role at College of the Rockies will present a meaningful challenge to progressive and visionary post-secondary leaders.

Major Accountabilities

Strategic Planning :

  • Fosters and articulates the vision and mission for the College, building on its distinctive niche and its quality academic programs, in consultation with the Board and the College’s employee groups;
  • Leads the implementation and execution of the Strategic Plan for the College.
  • Board Relationships :

  • Informs and engages the Board regarding all aspects of the College and its activities; ensures all Board members have all information necessary to properly exercise their responsibilities;
  • Leverages the Board’s expertise, networks, and influence to enhance fundraising, advocacy, and community partnerships, while also securing support to advance key institutional initiatives.
  • Leadership :

  • Guides employees by modeling leadership, working collegially, delegating appropriately, assessing risks and opportunities, and ensuring accountability such that all parties are focused both operationally and on the broader landscape;
  • Leads a talented, refreshed leadership team in an updated organizational structure; fosters a culture of collaboration, empowering individuals; guides the College through transformation with a focus on service, inclusivity and shared success, with students at the centre of decision-making;
  • Motivates employees to contribute their best toward the College’s mission to capitalize on the full potential of resources; works collaboratively with the faculty and support staff unions.
  • Relationship with Key Partners :

  • Oversees delivery of appropriate communications with the broader public and actively builds strong relationships with key partner groups;
  • Promotes the College to the community; plays a leading role in resource development initiatives; develops effective relationships with all communities, agencies, organizations and institutions which share common interests with the College;
  • Communicates key needs and challenges of the College at all levels of Government.
  • Indigenous Relations :

  • Ensures the continued response to the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action, the CICAN Indigenous Education Protocols, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples;
  • Champions decolonization and Indigenization through the elevation of Indigenous voices, promoting the integration of Indigenous knowledge across the curricula, stronger partnerships, and development of equitable policies that reduce barriers, honor Indigenous cultures, and support long-term reconciliation efforts;
  • Attends Indigenous Advisory Committee meetings and ensuring the provisions of the MOU between the Ktunaxa Nation and the College are met.
  • Organization and Management :

  • Ensures policies, services, and programs are in place to meet the needs of employees, to enable the College to attract / retain employees, and to maximize the full potential of its employees;
  • Encourages ongoing review of processes and structure to promote entrepreneurial usage of resources and talent to support the strategic plan and long-term goals;
  • Ensures the organizational structure aligns the authority and accountability of employees as they relate to the College’s objectives.
  • Policies and Programs :

  • Responsible to the Board for meeting objectives established for the College; ensures programs and services meet the standard established by the Board and all programs and services operate within approved funding limits;
  • Directs leadership to align policies and programs with the vision of being a student-ready college, reduce barriers to access, connect with industry and community, and promote collaboration to address challenges in post-secondary education.
  • Program Delivery :

  • Focuses on delivery of high quality, relevant, and responsive educational programs, and pursues curriculum that responds to the unique needs of the communities the College serves;
  • Provides leadership to advance the development of innovative programs and delivery methods; empowers teams to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body, support the growth of Indigenous communities;
  • Ensures program design and delivery enhance student engagement with their communities and the region, as well as take advantage of the unique geographic and cultural setting of the East Kootenays.
  • Financial and Administrative Management :

  • Ensures the development and implementation of effective financial and administrative systems; ensures full utilization of the financial resources of the college within the objectives, policies, plans and budgets established by the Board;
  • Seeks out novel or special funding opportunities; is creative in applying for additional resources;
  • Communicates the key needs and challenges of the College to all areas of the Government and actively lobbies government for monetary and other resources;
  • Oversees the capital plan and ensures expansion projects are effectively planned and managed and that facilities and grounds are maintained;
  • Ensures there is a robust and effective IT and information management program to meet the needs of academic and administrative programs and services.
  • Developments in Education :

  • Keeps up-to-date on developments in the field of post-secondary education in order to ensure that the College has the best possible information with which to consider and address emerging issues;
  • Provides operational and strategic leadership in the evolving realm of international education; ensures international students are supported and the College remains a destination of choice.
  • THE PERSON

    The ideal candidate should be a visionary leader who can articulate a bold direction aligned with the College’s new strategic plan, and possesses the collaborative skills, courage, and wherewithal to make it happen. The President effectively manages at both the strategic and operational levels, while working to improve Board, employee, community, and government relations, academic programming, and ultimately, student success. Well experienced with the complexities of the post-secondary landscape and possessing a leadership style that is inclusive and accessible, the President should be humble and courageous, and live with a strong sense of community and integrity that aligns with the College’s mission of serving the East Kootenays and its learners. Experience and interest in working with First Nations communities is a requirement. The President should also be decisive, and possess sufficient business acumen and policy planning expertise to assist with complex decision-making, as well as guide colleagues through challenging initiatives.

    Qualifications, Education, and Experience

    The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience :

  • A Master’s Degree required, and a minimum of ten years of progressive experience in the post-secondary sector, including substantive experience at a senior administrative level;
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with government, industry, school districts, and other post-secondary providers; a track record of effective communication, collegiality, and advocacy;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and direct involvement with First Nations;
  • Can work effectively and respectfully with communities and constituents; understands opportunities and challenges associated with managing operations in accordance with the terms of collective agreements;
  • Ability to mentor / motivate employees and build strong, effective teams with a commitment to working in a cross-functional, collaborative way in the pursuit of achieving the College’s strategic objectives;
  • Well developed strategic, innovation, and change management skills.

    COMPENSATION :

    A competitive compensation package will be provided including an attractive base salary and excellent benefits. The salary range is $225,000 to $250,000. Further details will be discussed in a personal interview.
