Position Purpose

This position will assist with ongoing research projects, focused on animal conservation and/or welfare related to nutrition. This position will report to the Supervisor Nutrition Science Research & Welfare. This role will also assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.

Core Role Responsibilities

• Assist with research and development projects that align with the Toronto Zoo Strategic.
• Assist with data collection, entry, management and analysis.
• Assist with updating nutritional records (Diet Database).
• Supporting diet intake estimates for various species cared.
• Assist with animal observations in relation to dietary changes.
• Collection and storage of diet and samples.
• Generate summary reports of animal observations or intake data to Nutrition Science, Veterinary Teams, Welfare and Wildlife Care Teams.
• Assist with conducting tours, virtual programs, volunteer events and outreach activities.
• Support conservation and welfare programs.
• Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• Minimum of two years post-secondary education (ex. diploma, BSc, MSc) in comparative animal nutrition studies or equivalent field.
• Working knowledge of food safety.
• Demonstrated ability to perform literature searches and generate reports.
• Proven experience collecting data for research (skills related to organization, time-management, and attention to detail).
• Ability to organize and manage data sets and information.
• Demonstrated customer service skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience with sample collection & storage.
• Must be able to meet physical demands of the job (lifting/carrying items up to 25 kg, standing and sitting for prolonged periods, kneeling, twisting and bending, including variable climatic conditions).
