ROLE OVERVIEW
As Heavy Equipment Operator, you safely operate articulated rock truck, backhoe, dozer, excavator, and loader for land clearing, building excavations, utilities and road construction activities. You excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials. You are also responsible for the basic maintenance of equipment, safety around equipment, and the compliance of markers, grades, and stakes. The Heavy Equipment Operator 1 must perform all work to regulated organizational, as well as provincial and federal standards and procedures and adhere to the highest standards of safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the following :
Checks daily work schedulePerform routine machine maintenance and check-in procedures at the start and check-out procedures at end of shift including changing vehicle fluids, fueling, greasing – all maintenance other than that performed at the start and end of a shift needs to be authorized by the Chief MechanicIf equipment is down for repair during your shift :
You must check in with your supervisor immediatelyThis is not deemed as personal time and you may be assigned alternative tasks – you are expected to perform work that moves the company forward, while on company timeIf the repair is going to take a significant amount of time and there is no alternative work, your shift will endEnsure you have clear instructions for your next shift at work, from your supervisor, before leaving the siteKeep equipment clean inside and outAlways operate machine in a safe and legal manner; be alert to hazards and follow safe work proceduresUnderstands complete scope of workAble to read and understand layout information in conjunction with plansAble to get maximum productivity out of equipment without abusing itOrganize necessary materialsTrench excavation on gradeBulk excavation in a rational mannerBackfillingLandscaping / GradingEquipment specific taskLoading trucksComplete daily paperwork in an orderly, logical and legible fashion including all pertinent informationEnsures customer satisfaction by displaying a courteous and friendly demeanorEnsures on-site quality controlAlways maintain personal safety gear (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel toed boots)KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

All skills, knowledge, and abilities of the Heavy Equipment Operator 2 plus :Minimum 5 years or 5000 hours operating experience on excavatorExpert level proficiencyFacilitate the smooth and safe operation of your teamDeliver a quality product on schedule and on budgetEnsure on-site quality control, limit rework and damageIdentify requirements for specific materials or tools and communicate these requests to the appropriate personKnow the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are metLead by example, give clear direction, and act with greater good of the company in mindEnsure your team complies with safety regulations, identify a need for safety training, complete an initial safety and hazard assessmentEnsure all workplace incidents of your crew are reported immediately to the next-level manager and are accurately documented in software and signed off by you; then participate in investigations as required to facilitate the process of shared learning outcomes throughout the companyEnsure daily timecards for direct reports are accurately entered into Heavy Job as requiredLiaise with engineers, clients, and owners as requiredDemonstrates comprehensive knowledge of safety requirements on job sites including basic requirements for personal protection, safe equipment operations and maintenanceDemonstrates functional knowledge of heavy equipment uses and their drive and hydraulic systemsDemonstrates basic operating techniques including prestart checks of a machine’s hardware (frame, body panels, tires or tracks, and safety equipment), driveline components, hydraulic system components, electrical components and controlsDisplays understanding how to safely start, move, steer, stop, and shut down different machine typesDemonstrates understanding of duties and responsibilities of the operator, safety rules for operation, the attachment of implements, and basic preventive maintenance practicesDemonstrates broad understanding to the process of planning and executing earth moving activities on various types of construction projectsDemonstrates broad understanding of the concept of preparing graded surfaces using heavy equipment including identification of construction stakes and interpretation of marks on each type of stake and the process for grading slopesPhysically demandingFrequently rotating (right / left) – check / see mirrors, blind spotsEye / hand and eye / hand foot coordinationRepeating the same movement – body rotation, feet and hand controlsGripping and reachingSitting for long periods of timeClimbing – stairs / ladders; getting in and out of equipmentCustomer service skills including the ability to communicate effectively with the general publicInterpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other Snow Services and Coastal Mountain Excavations employeesQUALIFICATIONS
Valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ LicenceGrade 12 diplomaCollege or industry courses in heavy equipment operating an assetTrade or Red Seal certification an assetCOMPENSATION & BENEFITS
