Position Details
The University Library requires a qualified Archives Technician to join the Library’s Archives Team. This is a full-time, 2-year term appointment beginning approximately March 2, 2026.
Reporting to the University Archivist, this position will be working in the archives, organizing and compiling descriptive records, physically processing archival materials, and providing archival reference services. This role functions to facilitate the accessibility, preservation, and usability of archival holdings for the University community and its stakeholders.
Primary responsibilities of this position include :
- Organizes and compiles information for accession and descriptive records, including preparing file lists
- Accessions records into Archives and Special Collections’ holdings
- Arranges and describes archival records according to industry standards (Rules for Archival Description) and in-house policies and procedures
- Completes physical processing tasks, such as re-foldering, re-boxing, and storing archival materials
- Conducts preventive conservation on Archives and Special Collections’ holdings
- Assesses the physical and digital preservation needs of records in a variety of media and determines the optimal preservation strategy to ensure the longevity of the materials
- Researches the background of record creators and individuals, families, and organizations found in the Archives’ holdings
- Creates, edits, and publishes digital finding aids using archival management systems, such as Access to Memory (AtoM)
- Creates, edits, and publishes metadata records to provide public access to Archives holdings using digital asset management systems
- Participates in the digitization of material from the Archives
- Answers reference questions regarding items in the Archives; assists patrons in finding materials and / or sending to patrons in response to requests.
Position Qualifications We are seeking a candidate who possesses the following :
A bachelor’s degree and a two-year college diploma in Library and Information Technology, and 1-3 years’ experience. Ideally, the candidate will also possess an Archival Technician diploma and / or relevant experience working in archives.Knowledge and use of RDA (Resource Description and Access), Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Call Numbers, Library of Congress Authorities, Library of Congress Cutter Tables, Canadian Name Authorities, Canadian Subject Headings, MARC 21 (Machine Readable Cataloguing), ClassWeb (Classification Web), Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and DCMI Type Vocabulary.Post-secondary library experienceExperience in metadata creation for digitized collections and ability to provide expertise surrounding authority control and authorized forms of names.Experience working in Archives or other heritage organizationsExperience applying and interpreting the Rules for Archival Description, metadata standards, and relevant controlled vocabulariesExperience using archival management systemsExperience using digital preservation systemsExperience digitizing and editing photographs, videos, and print worksMicrosoft office suite experienceAbility to lift up to 25 poundsExcellent organization and time-management skills, close attention to detail, and the ability to exercise initiative and judgment appropriately.The ability to establish and maintain productive and collegial relationships with co-workers in a team-oriented work environment.A great degree of independence and the ability to prioritize competing, time-sensitive demands.Effective communication skills and a strong service orientation in working with and assisting co-workers, library patrons, members of the University community, and the general public.To apply for this position, please refer to “Careers at the U” on the University of Lethbridge Human Resources webpage at https : / / www.ulethbridge.ca / careers
