Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Operations, the Behavioural Consultant conducts comprehensive behavioural assessments and supports case managers in developing and implementing behavioural interventions for clients with cognitive impairment, behaviours associated with dementia and psychiatric disorders. Works in collaboration with the interprofessional team to support the development, implementation and review of admission safety plans, behaviour support plans and access and discharge planning. Provides supportive information to community care networks and participates in the evaluation of process and outcomes to ensure continuing quality of service. Responsibilities Conducts behavioural assessments, gathers relevant psychosocial history, conducts in vivo behavioural observation, and utilizes ABC charting and/or other appropriate behavioural data gathering techniques and tests. Analyzes and synthesizes data gathered and develops behavioural intervention plans. Provides training/coaching regarding behavioural plans and interventions to family-members and caregivers where appropriate. Works in collaboration with interprofessional team to provide support and input in the development, documentation, implementation, modification, and review of admission safety plans and behaviour support plans. Collaborates with interprofessional team members in preparing for, participating in, and contributing to initial psychiatric assessment; assesses client’s progress; follows up on the implementation and re-evaluation of behavioural strategies with interprofessional team members, as well as members of the client's support network. Performs case reviews and evaluation of processes; prepares reports of relevant observations on evaluation of care to ensure continuity of quality service, communication, and client documentation. Attends and participates in meetings directly concerning clients, including assessments, case reviews, progress meetings, access, discharges, and internal/external case conferences. Participates and supports interprofessional team with treatment planning by providing discipline-specific assessments and recommendations. Coordinates assessment, intervention, and follow-up for a caseload of individuals living with cognitive impairment and behaviours associated with dementia and psychiatric disorders. Collaborates with interprofessional team members to assist in program development, which includes the necessary preparation, prioritizing, scheduling, and arranging for space and other resources. Supports family members and care providers through the provision of up-to-date clinical information; assists clients and caregivers by recommending utilization of existing community resources. Provides information to community care networks on potential behaviours and challenges associated with cognitive impairment in the elderly and dementia. Maintains client files according to established standards, procedures, and protocols. Participates on committees as directed to promote optimal support for clients, to facilitate the resolution of issues, to represent the rehabilitation goals on regional committees, and to advocate for the goals and objectives of the team/program. Participates in approved interprofessional research and special projects in collaboration with designated personnel/team and other health care professionals, through methods such as collecting data, summarizing information, and/or providing verbal updates for review and further analysis by principal researcher, research team and/or project coordinator. Maintains and updates own clinical knowledge within area of practice and develops a plan in collaboration with designated personnel/team for professional development. Reviews progress to ensure that goals are achieved within established time frames. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training & Experience Master's Degree in Psychology, Special Education, or other relevant health-related discipline or Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis. Two years recent experience providing direct behavioural assessment/consulting older adult mental health clients. Valid BC Driver’s License. Regional travel will require the use of a personal vehicle. Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive behavioral assessments, including interviews, observations, and functional analysis. Demonstrated skills in developing, implementing, and evaluating behavioural treatment programs. Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness and Psychosocial Rehabilitation methodology. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff. Knowledge of community, social and mental health resources. Ability to identify emotional, social, or environmental barriers and intervene to eliminate stigma. Ability to effectively manage conflict situations and aggressive behaviour and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interprofessional team in care planning for complex clients and to proactively manage and resolve conflict. Broad knowledge of therapy theory and clinical practice within a client and family centred model of care. Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practice and gender affirming care. Demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health. Basic knowledge of research process and methodology. Demonstrated ability to work in complex environments. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to observe and record objective data. Ability to organize, prioritize and manage caseload. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with clients, families, team members, other groups and community agency personnel. Ability to deal effectively with others. Ability to operate related office equipment, including computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, and e-mail software. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
