PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The conductor is a foundational role in the railway, working within the framework of the union agreement. A conductor is an essential member of the train crew, assisting in switching rail cars, making or splitting trains in rail yards, and moving rail cars between rail yards. The role requires vigilance for the safety of yourself and others. Conductor work involves unscheduled shift schedules, lengthy periods away from home, and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Physically able to walk up to 10 kilometres a day on uneven ground, climb and descend, and lift or pull heavy objects up to 80 pounds on occasion.
  • Willingness to work unscheduled shift work in a 24 / 7 operating environment.
  • Availability for up to 12‑hour shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to report to work within a two‑hour call window after a scheduled rest period.
  • Excellent focus, attention to detail, and multitasking ability.
  • Strong communication skills, including clear and concise instructions by radio.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to pass required physical job tasks, written examinations, and to read and understand safety instructions, operating rules, and other written or printed material in English.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s licence required.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Work in either train or yard service depending on seniority.
  • Execute specific instructions detailing a train’s route and movements.
  • Coordinate switching of cars, including coupling / uncoupling and lifting couplers.
  • Observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting movement of the train.
  • Signal crew members for engine or train movements using signals or radio as required.
  • Maintain thorough understanding of and adherence to the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders, and bulletins.
  • Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in an emergency.
  • Move on and off moving or stationary equipment safely.
  • Complete forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports.
  • Handle emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and apply first‑aid techniques if required.

  • TRAINING PROGRAM

    CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid in‑class and field training. Upon starting classroom training, you will earn 80% of the job rate, $199.69 per day, and after successful completion and passing Part II exams, 90% of the job rate, $224.65 per day. Qualified conductors can earn $85,000 in the first year.

    PRE‑EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Medical and Drug Testing

    As a safety‑critical position, a successful pre‑employment medical assessment—including physical, vision, hearing, alcohol and drug audit assessments—and a negative company drug test are required. Post‑hire drug testing may also be required.

  • Criminal history check.
