Residing in the Office of the Vice Dean, Medical Education, the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) is dedicated to working with and supporting health professions learners within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine to optimize the learning environment and experience at individual and systems levels, and enable learners’ development into and as health care professionals.

The Coordinator and Counselor is an integral member of the Learner Experience Unit (LEU) within the Office of Learner Affairs, Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

The Coordinator and Counselor, Learner Experience is the first point of contact for learners who have experienced or witnessed mistreatment in the learning environment.

They will work collaboratively with the LEU team and those seeking support from the team in managing support for highly complex cases.

In addition to providing case management support, they will also provide personal counselling to learners, will act as a consultant to faculty, staff, and students on issues related to mistreatment, provide LEU program coordination, conduct workshops and provides relevant training.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Providing initial clinical support, counselling, and / or psychotherapy to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources
  • Providing case management support to students and responding to escalated complaints through the Temerty Faculty of Medicine reporting pathways using informal negotiation skills
  • Developing components of treatment plans based on appropriatetherapeutic approaches
  • Interpreting and applying guidelines, policies and procedures when making independent decisions, including ensuring program guidelines, policies and procedures are applied consistently and equitably
  • Updating and maintaining learner records
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars; developing a comprehensive formal training program that supports operational objectives;

delivering presentations at conferences

  • Fostering positive relationships with campus resources and community health services providers; Serving as an expert resource to a group of professionals in the specialty
  • Handling complex and / or sensitive information and escalating as appropriate

Essential Qualifications :

  • Master's Degree in social work, occupational therapy, counselling / psychotherapy or equivalent. Must be in good standing with professional college that allows for the practice of psychotherapy in Ontario.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience counseling in the educational context, preferably health professions education with experience at the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) and / or Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) level.
  • Demonstrated experience providing consultation and advice to staff on complex counselling matters.
  • Experience working with health professional learners in academic difficulty and from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, presenting with a range of difficulties and personal issues.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating educational workshops, seminars, training programs, and presentations.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed approaches as well as with anti-oppression / anti-racism, equity diversity inclusion indigeneity accessibility frameworks
  • Advanced proficiency, including MS Office Suite and Adobe Professional.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Able to work effectively and collaboratively with professional staff in the university, to set up networks of aid and response for learners in difficulty
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise patience, tact, judgment and discretion
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff, and faculty in ways that build confidence and trust.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize the limits of one's own scope of practice
  • Understanding and adherence to confidentiality.

USW Pay Band 15 $95,627. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $122,290. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation / Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
