Jump Recruitment, on behalf of our client,  The Innu Round Table Secretariat  is seeking a  Social Worker  to join their team.

The Innu Round Table Secretariat is dedicated to the collective well-being of the Mushuau and Sheshatshiu Innu. Focused on the well-being of Innu children and families, the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu First Nations have established Prevention Services as the agency responsible for developing and delivering child and family support services. These services aim to assist families involved or at risk of involvement in the formal child protection system. The agency is Innu-led, utilizing a holistic approach to wellness and working towards full Innu jurisdiction over child and family services.

The goal of the Prevention Services agency, based on Innu knowledge and culture, is to reduce the involvement of Innu children and families in the current child protection system (CSSD) and mitigate its impacts, especially on children. The agency also seeks to encourage and support family and community health.

The Position

This will be a full-time position is based in Natuashish and report to the Mushuau Innu Team Lead-Senior Innu Representative. The role requires a mature individual with a social work background and a strong desire to foster meaningful social change. As part of an agency team of Innu Representatives, Community Workers and social workers you will collaborate with Mushuau Innu First Nation staff who also reside in Natuashish.

Your social work duties will be shared with two other social workers who work alternating two-week rotations in and out of Natuashish. Your direct responsibilities will include overseeing the implementation and evaluation of the Innu-CSSD Protocol. This protocol ensures collaboration between prevention services and CSSD for the continual improvement of culturally meaningful services for the Innu.

As a social worker, you will assist in advocacy services and case management processes, maintaining confidential notes and files in Sharevision. Your work will align with the Innu Care Approach, reflecting Innu culture and values.

Key Duties and Functions

  • Cultural Competence Build a comprehensive knowledge base of Innu culture by engaging in ongoing learning opportunities about Innu history and health visions, including the Innu Healing Strategy, the Innu Care Approach, the Mushuau Innu timeline, and the Mushuau Innu People’s Inquiry Gathering Voices Report Demonstrate a willingness to unlearn cultural biases and colonial perspectives to incorporate new understandings of Innu history, culture, strengths, and health
  • Teamwork Foster relationships to become an ally of all Innu Prevention Services team members Collaborate with other community health workers across the First Nation to establish effective linkages between various Innu health services and programs Develop and maintain effective working relationships with provincial child protection staff (CSSD) in Natuashish and other offices as needed
  • Service Provision Develop a variety of prevention activities and strategies reflecting Innu culture and the Innu Care Approach to meet community needs Understand current services and service gaps for children and families to help develop and coordinate appropriate intervention plans and services Work with families, community staff, and other service providers to create case management plans for children returning home from care Collaborate on communication and outreach materials to build community awareness of prevention activities Participate in recreational and community events and activities
  • Administrative Maintain a filing system for documenting and managing information on various prevention strategies and activities Participate in regular team meetings for ongoing support and progress reviews Represent the IRT Secretariat and the community on specific groups or committees as required Develop a 12-month work plan for review with the Team Lead

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Abilities, and Skills

  • A degree in Social Work and eligible for registration with the NLCSW
  • 5 years of experience
  • Preferably, social work experience in an Indigenous community
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Understanding of colonialism and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, especially on Indigenous children in child welfare systems
  • Clear code of conduct and vulnerable sector checks
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Personal Suitability
