The Opportunity
This temporary Customs Specialist role offers hands-on exposure to a complex, high-volume import and export operation within a global manufacturing and distribution environment. The position plays a key role in ensuring goods move across borders efficiently, compliantly, and without disruption.
The role is well-suited to a customs or trade compliance professional who enjoys operational ownership, thrives under time-sensitive deadlines, and values working closely with internal stakeholders and external service providers.
In addition to meaningful work, this opportunity offers a hybrid work arrangement, with in-office collaboration Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, providing a balance of structure and flexibility.
Position Description
- Process export shipments of parts and accessories, including preparation of required documentation and coordination with internal supply chain teams, freight forwarders, and customs brokers
- Manage the return of reusable packaging materials to manufacturing locations in accordance with established procedures
- Ensure complete accuracy of customs entries related to duties and taxes, including preparation of K84 documentation for internal accounting and reconciliation
- Facilitate same-day processing and payment of duties and taxes to the Receiver General of Canada upon receipt
- Coordinate and support customs clearance for all inbound shipments across multiple product lines prior to arrival at Canadian ports or borders
- Review, validate, and process freight invoices from ocean, air, and ground carriers related to import activity
- Respond to customs broker inquiries by supplying accurate and timely shipment and compliance information for third-party providers and affiliated entities
- Verify and update empty container and equipment return information for ocean shipments
- Utilize systems to review, release, and manage blocked documents or orders related to screening, embargo, or legal controls
- Prepare impact declarations for incoming invoices and transmit required information to customs brokers to support clearance activities
- Coordinate with internal units and manifest teams regarding upcoming shipments that do not yet have inbound delivery data in the system
- Create and transmit export customs declarations for outbound deliveries to freight forwarders in line with regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Previous experience in customs operations, trade compliance, or international logistics within an import and export environment
- Solid understanding of Canadian customs regulations, duties, taxes, and reporting requirements
- Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and multiple transportation modes including ocean, air, and truck
- Familiarity with enterprise trade or logistics systems, including Global Trade Services platforms, is an asset
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy in a deadline-driven environment
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both internal teams and external partners
- Comfortable operating within structured processes and compliance-focused workflows
