Computer Hardware Engineer
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic, and results‑driven professional to join our team as a Computer Hardware Engineer. This role reports to the Manager of Engineering and is responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining high‑quality control computer systems, including replacement components and controllers in Real‑Time Process Computing (RTPC), responding to technical issues, and ensuring compliance with design governance.
Key Accountabilities
- Design, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot control computer systems in a nuclear facility.
- Utilize computer component development tools to design, test, and refine control computing system components.
- Manage, implement, and enhance Real‑Time Process Computing (RTPC) systems for reliable performance.
- Perform development, testing, and troubleshooting in a computer lab environment.
- Apply knowledge of digital logic, computer architecture, digital electronics, computer buses, and basic operating system concepts.
- Prepare comprehensive design documentation, technical specifications, plans, procedures, user manuals, reports, drawings, and guidelines per the Engineering Change Control (ECC) process.
- Provide operations, maintenance, and project stakeholders with specialized expertise in site control computer hardware and computing labs.
- Conduct technical discussions, meetings, and collaboration with stakeholders in electrical, electronics, and computing systems.
- Attend meetings, conferences, and training involving electrical, electronics, cyber security, hardware, and software systems.
- Lead technical teams to drive engineering processes required for modifications at a nuclear facility.
- Maintain and upgrade site computer labs and computing hardware support tools and test jigs.
- Assess internal and external business challenges, regulatory issues, and OPEX; recommend process and design improvements.
- Reverse‑engineer legacy computing hardware to develop design‑basis documents and component / device requirements.
- Perform electromagnetic susceptibility and immunity analysis of control computer equipment.
Qualifications
4‑year Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.2‑8 years of relevant engineering experience.Experience with computer system communication / data buses (UART, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCI / PCIe, ISA, etc.).Hands‑on experience in lab environments using test equipment such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, function generators, and multimeters to design, test, and troubleshoot digital computer / embedded systems.Experience designing PCBs and using schematic capture and PCB layout software (OrCAD, Altium, KiCAD, etc.).Strong background in computer hardware component design and integration.Ability to develop and execute test plans for complex computer control boards.Proficiency in preparing technical requirements and documentation (requirements, specifications, design change packages).Desired : proficiency in networking protocols (Ethernet, IP, TCP / UDP) and troubleshooting with Wireshark.Experience with RTOS UNIX‑based systems (QNX, RTLinux, etc.) and terminal command‑line interfacing.Experience with Varian Data Machines minicomputers (V72 series).Familiarity with IPC, DO‑254, IEC 61000‑4 series standards.Fully licensed engineer in Ontario, or eligible to be licensed in Ontario.Additional Information
