Job Summary
The Database Administrator is responsible for designing, deploying, maintaining, monitoring, and supporting SQL Server environments that underpin both tactical and strategic information systems.
This role serves as the final escalation point for complex database issues and major incidents, while owning and delivering multiple concurrent technical initiatives from start to finish.
The DBA acts as a subject matter expert (SME) for SQL Server services and ensures reliability, security, and performance across environments.
Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities
- Design and define SQL Server service architecture for new and existing applications
- Install, configure, and support SQL Server services across on-premises and cloud environments
- Ensure database security, integrity, and performance through user access management, index and statistics maintenance, and regular integrity checks
- Monitor SQL Server performance using enterprise monitoring tools; manage alerts, delegate resolution, and audit outcomes
- Provide technical leadership to peers and support task delegation for both major and minor initiatives
- Independently implement, document, and deliver enhancement requests
- Review and approve technical design specifications to ensure alignment with standards and best practices
- Audit, test, and maintain backup and recovery procedures using native SQL tools and enterprise backup solutions
- Act as the final escalation point for complex database issues raised by database engineers
- Serve as an SME in three or more SQL Server technologies, such as Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Azure SQL (PaaS)
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience6+ years of hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise environmentsStrong expertise in SQL Server architecture, installation, configuration, and maintenance across on-premises and cloud platformsProven experience managing database security, including user access, roles, permissions, and compliance controlsAdvanced knowledge of performance tuning, indexing strategies, statistics management, and database optimizationExperience implementing and managing SQL Server monitoring tools, alerts, and incident resolution processesDemonstrated ability to design, test, and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions using both native SQL tools and enterprise backup software
