Position description
The Department of Biology at Mount Allison University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in the area of microbiology. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor and is expected to commence on July 1, 2025, subject to budgetary approval. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. by the time of appointment and have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and research. We welcome candidates with research interests in autotrophic or heterotrophic microbes (e.g. bacteria, microalgae, fungi), or viruses. The successful candidate will teach both introductory and upper-year microbiology courses, as well as others within their areas of competence. Candidates must provide evidence of ability to work in a collegial and student-centered environment. We seek applicants who display actions to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion. Applicants must submit a 1-page statement describing their past contributions to, and future goals for improving equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and research.
Mount Allison is a primarily undergraduate institution. The Biology Department has an intensive research-based undergraduate Honours program (with internal funding opportunities to support summer student research), and a graduate program at the M.Sc. level. The successful candidate is expected to launch an active and externally funded research program that integrates participation by undergraduate research students. Faculty members can also supervise PhD students through other institutions. The successful candidate will be encouraged to explore collaborations with faculty across Biology and cognate departments. Department members also benefit from strong collaborations with government agencies and local stewardship groups. Mount Allison is surrounded by diverse coastal and terrestrial habitats, major rivers and lakes, salt and freshwater marshes, Acadian forest, peatlands, the Bay of Fundy, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Facilities on campus include a temperature and light-controlled glasshouse, controlled environment chambers, two aquatics facilities with both fresh and saltwater capacity, a digital microscopy facility with fluorescent and SEM imaging, an environmental analysis and stable isotope laboratory, communal molecular biology equipment, communal cell culture, and Biosafety Level 2 facilities.
