Casual Mobile Crisis Response Team Member

SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 32 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW :

The Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) Members are key members of the SCO MCRT who work with purpose to support southern First Nation citizens and communities with mobile crisis intervention, rapid response, and mental health and addiction navigation. The MCRT will be trauma-informed and benefit from southern Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and culturally appropriate mental health and wellness service providers. As qualified professionals, they will also act as a vital link to clients’ aftercare and / or future care plans and be trained for coordination services. This position is located in Brandon, MB.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Reporting to the Health & Wellness Manager, MCRT Members will be responsible for :

  • Crisis intervention, triage services, and increased capacity for emergency responses to crises
  • Frontline mental health support services to 32 southern First Nation communities and Tribal Councils
  • Provide community-specific trauma-informed mental health supports to community crisis events
  • Relaying all necessary information to Health & Wellness Manager and Intake Coordinator(s)
  • Mental Health First Aid screening and assessment to match individuals in crisis to the appropriate level of treatment and support
  • Case Management
  • Safe talk and sharing circles
  • Short term, one-on-one counselling
  • Substance use support and triaging using a harm reduction approach
  • Grief and loss support
  • Domestic and family violence support and triaging
  • Referrals to traditional and clinical support services
  • Alternative services including traditional ceremonies and land-based teachings
  • Prevention training / Facilitation
  • Individual client assessments such as suicide assessment and safety plan, self-esteem and depression scale, and mental health status
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A degree in a mental health related field and regulated profession such as counselling, social work, therapy, psychology, or psychiatric nursing
  • Five (5) years of experience providing crisis mental health services. A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience working with southern First Nations, Tribal Councils, and their health teams
  • Good knowledge of Federal, Provincial and First Nation health care systems including First Nation and Inuit Health Branch, Nursing Stations, and Telehealth technology
  • Holds a “families first” approach and can work collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with families, colleagues, supervisors, and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to travel for maximum 3-5 days by vehicle, boat, and plane to remote communities on a rotational basis
  • Ability to work under pressure and to independently manage a wide range of tasks, often within short timelines
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences
  • Proficiency and competence in the use of computers (MS Forms, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages is considered an asset
  • OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

  • Incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector, a current and clear Child Abuse Registry check, and a current and clear Adult Abuse Registry check
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle as travel will be regularly required
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, or extended hours, whether on-call or on rotation
  • If the candidate is a member of a registered profession, the candidate must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body
  • WAGE RANGE : $65,000 – 80,000 (commensurate with education and experience)
