Technical Director

The Opportunity

The Technical Director (TD) oversees all technical aspects of theatrical productions, ensuring designs are executed safely and efficiently. A key member in performing arts, the TD collaborates with the artistic team, program managers, directors, designers, and production staff to bring their creative vision to life while managing logistics. The TD must have a strong knowledge of various production techniques, including stage, set, sound, lighting, projections, stage management, props, costumes, carpentry, and rigging.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Production Manager, Performing Arts, some key accountabilities include :

Leadership and Coordination

  • Responsible for the timely set up, running and strike of all performances, residencies, programs and events at Banff Centre.
  • Supervise the technical team, including stage carpenters, electricians, music technicians, sound and video technicians, stage hands, designers and other production staff.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all technical elements of the production.
  • Coordinate schedules and timelines for build, load-in, technical rehearsals, and strike.
  • Develop and manage the technical schedule, ensuring timely completion of all technical elements within prescribed budget.
  • Follow the CUPE union agreement and ensure that the Performing Arts department is always in compliance.
  • Foster an internal culture that maintains the highest standards for customer service, excellence of staff, participant and guest experience, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.
  • Ensure a positive and safe work environment for all Banff team members, aligned with Banff Centre’s policies including but not limited to code of ethics, anti-harassment policies, contractual obligations, and strategic directions.
  • Empower the team to consistently perform at a high level by fostering open communication, setting clear objectives and priorities, and cultivating a culture of positive intent that aligns with Banff Centre's values.
  • Ensure all team members represent Banff Centre to any stakeholders and constituents in an informed, helpful, and positive way, striving to increase the organization’s public value in each interaction.
  • Recruit, hire, train and mentor team members, assigning work, and measuring their performance in relation to the strategic standards of excellence and goals.
  • Ensure that team members fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance standards and provide ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching and support as employees strive to achieve expectations.
  • Assists the Production Manager with managing the practicum programs so that training aligns with both the Banff Centre objectives and the participant’s training goals.
  • Assists with recruitment of faculty, mentors, contract staff and guest speakers as required.

Design, Execution and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the scenic, lighting, sound, costume, and video designers to ensure technical plans align with artistic goals.
  • Review technical drawings, plans, riders, and specifications; ensure that all designs are feasible, safe, and practical for the space.
  • Oversee the construction and rigging of sets, including scenery, props, and special effects.
  • Supervise the setup and installation of lighting, sound, and video equipment.
  • Manage the integration of all technical components into the rehearsal process.
  • Ensure that technical packets are given to incoming residencies, events and program participants well in advance.
  • Schedule pre-production meetings with external clients to establish early what is feasible and achievable.
  • Communicate technical requirements for incoming programs, events and residencies to the department heads.
  • Coordination with Front-of-House teams to ensure smooth coordination between technical elements (lighting, sound, rigging) and audience-facing elements (seating, safety measures, audience experience.)
  • Ensure that stage managers and technical staff are aligned in terms of technical setups, changes, and cues for performances.
  • Coordination with Audio & Video to ensure that whenever a performance is being captured, the appropriate personnel are aware of the schedule and any factors that may impede their work.
  • Budgeting and Resource Management

  • Assists Production Manager to develop annual production, program and operating plans and budgets, track finances and forecast reports.
  • Work within the production budget to source and procure necessary materials and equipment.
  • Assist in cost estimation and provide recommendations for budget adjustments as needed.
  • Manage labor costs, equipment rental, and any technical supplies.
  • Work with the Production Manager in planning staffing needs for the future.
  • Assists the Production Manager in developing capital requirements and purchase plans for equipment and systems for performing arts venues.
  • Technical Support and Safety

  • Lead ‘toolbox’ meetings at the beginning of a load in to discuss health and safety, schedule and daily goals.
  • Oversee the repair and maintenance of stage machinery, lighting equipment, and sound systems.
  • Provide technical support during rehearsals, performances, and load-out / strike.
  • Ensure all technical operations are conducted in compliance with safety regulations, including proper rigging, electrical standards, and equipment operation.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols for the load-in, rehearsal, and performance processes.
  • Train staff in proper safety procedures and ensure safety is maintained during all technical activities.
  • Rehearsals, Performances and Post-production

  • Lead technical rehearsals, ensuring all technical cues are properly timed and executed.
  • Communicate with clients and stage manager during rehearsals and performances to address any technical issues that arise.
  • Ensure smooth operation during live performances, troubleshooting issues as needed.
  • Oversee the strike process, ensuring that all equipment, sets, and materials are properly dismantled and stored or returned.
  • Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Completion of university degree in related discipline.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience supervising in a unionized stage environment.
  • Minimum of five years' professional experience in a similar role.
  • Experience with a variety of live performances including theatre, dance, and music.
  • Project management and project coordination skills.
  • Knowledge of structural and mechanical construction for the stage, of materials and techniques, including welding, rigging and painting.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of lighting, sound, and video.
  • Ability to read and produce technical drawings and schematics.
  • Knowledge of current safety standards and their implementation.
  • Certification in Working at Heights and Aerial Platform Operation are assets.
  • Product, material, pricing, and logistics research skills.
  • Experience fulfilling technical and touring riders.
  • Knowledge and practical experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Strong scheduling, and budgetary management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent organization with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines, and a positive attitude while working under pressure.
  • Employment Terms and Benefits

  • In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management / PSP employees, this is a salaried, full-time position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The salary range for this position is $67,367 - $100,039 based on experience.
  • The successful candidate will enjoy twenty paid vacation days and four personal days annually, extended medical and dental benefits, and participation in an employer-matched pension plan.
