The purpose of this position is to act as a member of a multi-service case management team, which ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and relevant legislation. Correctional Officers ensure public safety by identifying and responding to incidents and assisting in the rehabilitation and re-integration of offenders.

Duties will include but are not limited to :

  • Ensure all activities comply with Community and Correctional Services Policy and Procedures and relevant legislation;
  • Supervise and communicate day to day movement of offenders and monitor offender movement in and out of units through radio and log books;
  • Maintains proper use and control of access of keys and equipment;
  • Responsible for Control and searches offenders leaving or entering the Centre;
  • Conduct security checks on locks, doors, windows, etc. in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Centre;
  • Provide a variety of casework functions for offenders, including orientation to the Centre, informs offenders of their rights and responsibilities while in custody, and ensures the risks and needs identified in a validated risk assessment tools, such as the LS / CMI, is taking into consideration during the offenders time in custody;
  • Complete routine reports, forms or documentation associated with the operation of the unit;
  • Monitor the progress of the offenders through ongoing interaction, case planning, file documentation and through sharing information with other staff;
  • Advises offenders of available programs, ensures appropriate referrals for offenders based on case plan, and through communication with Operations Manager to assist in rehabilitation;
  • Coordinate and participate in case conferences and ensures they are conducted as per policy and procedures;
  • Daily case recording and documentation in unit communication log;
  • Assists in the development of discharge plans for offenders;
  • Observes interpersonal dynamics and seeks to eliminate or minimize possible hazards or threats to offenders;
  • Manages conflict on unit before it escalates and interacting with offenders;
  • Provide first line of response in Critical Incident Management and prepare incident reports as required; and
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Applicants must have successful completion of an undergraduate degree, preferably in the social sciences, or completion of a recognized correctional officer, youth worker or a related community college program.  Applicants must have relevant on-the-job training or related experience.
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and problem solving skills.
  • The successful applicant must possess current CPR and First Aid Certificates, a valid Class 4 driver’s license and have a good driving record.
  • Applicants must have a good previous work and attendance record.
  • Applicants must be available for shift work and week-end work on an on-call basis.
  • Satisfactory references and a satisfactory criminal records check and vulnerable sector check are required.
  • Other Qualifications :

  • Experience in a position with responsibility for the supervision and guidance of others, preferably in an institutional / residential environment, would be considered an asset.
