Established in 1976, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. SIIT welcomes over 2400 students into our urban and community programs annually as well as serving over 6000 clients through our eight Career Centres across the province. The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies is playing a significant role in Saskatchewan's economic future. You can contribute to that success while building your career.


Nature and Scope

Instructors report directly to their applicable Program Coordinator and are located across the province of Saskatchewan in various educational settings. The incumbent instructs SIIT students in the classroom, laboratory or shop environments and assists during consultation hours. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.

General Accountability

As the educational leader in the classroom, Instructors will be responsible for delivering SIIT programs and curricula with the purpose of promoting student success. Working collaboratively as a team of educational professionals, Instructors will demonstrate a strong commitment to create and maintain an inclusive and positive learning environment at SIIT.

Specific Accountabilities

Instructors in the Educational Assistant Program will keep current with developments in their subject areas, instructional resources and teaching methods, and make relevant adjustments to instructional plans and activities to meet the diverse and individual needs of their students. Instructors will plan, organize, and implement instructional activities which create a supporting learning environment and provide the greatest opportunity for student success. These include the following broad areas of accountability:

Instruction and Administration

  • Develop course plans by translating the course syllabus learning outcomes into structured topics and learning activities, incorporating course texts and supplemental resources for the duration of the course
  • Prepare lesson plans and instructional materials to support effective course delivery
  • Use appropriate methods of evaluating and recording student progress within set time frames in the academic calendar
  • Integrate SIIT's Learning Management System to support instructional delivery, organize course content, communicate with students, record student grades, and take attendance
  • Maintain accurate records and timely grade reporting using approved institutional systems and procedures
  • Use available technologies and resources to prepare Educational Assistants to effectively support student learning and engagement
  • Apply appropriate instructional strategies and methods of instruction to guide student learning and accommodate diverse learning needs
  • Make informed recommendations on course content and assessment that will enhance student success
  • Engage in ongoing research of relevant resources, review of provincial educational standards and emerging trends to inform effective teaching and learning practices

Student Success

  • Monitor and support student academic progress and subject matter understanding, and assist students in accessing appropriate academic and non-academic supports
  • Make timely recommendations to Student Services and/or Program Coordinator to support students with academic and non-academic concerns
  • Create and maintain an inclusive, respectful, and positive learning environment that promotes student engagement, belonging, and meaningful learning
  • Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, organize, supervise and evaluate work experience practicums

Relationship Management & Leadership

  • Adhere to and promote academic regulations and SIIT policies and procedures
  • Support the enhancement of future student enrollment through positive promotion of SIIT programs
  • Attend and positively contribute during staff, department, and institute meetings
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional working relationship among students, colleagues, and partners across the institution
  • Develops and maintains respectful relations by problem solving and constructive resolution of student challenges
  • Maintain effective classroom management and, when necessary, recommend appropriate action to the Program Coordinator regarding student behaviour, including formal student disciplinary procedures
  • Ensure a positive, diverse, and inclusive work and learning environment


Required Qualifications and Experience:
A Bachelor of Education degree is required, with a minimum of 3 years' teaching experience. Preference given to those who have teaching experience in an adult learning environment with an understanding of adult learning theories and principles. Experience working with Educational Assistants, students with diverse learning needs, and knowledge in the K-12 school systems is considered an asset. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations is also an asset. For success in this position, a genuine commitment to help students learn and succeed is required.
