Nature & Scope

YMCA Camp Kanannaq is located on Nadsilnich (West) Lake, a 20 minutes drive from Prince George, BC. It is situated on 200 acres of beautiful forested lakefront property. We have a beautiful waterfront where campers spend part of each day swimming or boating, and many forested program spaces for activities such as archery, fire-building, and orienteering. During July and August, Camp Kanannaq offers day camp programs for youth ages 5-17, with one week camps for youth ages 5-15, and two and three week leadership development programs. In the spring and fall, Camp Kanannaq offers day and overnight Outdoor Education programs.

Camp Kanannaq operates as a day camp, and does not offer accommodation to staff during regular programming. Our limited indoor spaces and facilities provide a rustic setting for those who enjoy working outside. Camp Kanannaq employs 15-20 staff during the summer, with a smaller team of about 3-5 during Outdoor Education seasons. Successful Camp Kanannaq staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting, who are ready to work hard outdoors in all conditions, and who believe in 5-star customer service for all participants.

YMCA Camp Kanannaq is seeking individuals to fill the role of Lifeguard.

Camp Lifeguards are responsible for the safety and positive experience of all campers and staff at the waterfront and they ensure swimming and boating activities meet BCCA, Lifesaving and YMCA standards.

The waterfront is one of the key program areas of Camp Kanannaq and lifeguards are required to positively role model, teach and enforce waterfront safety rules and regulations for all campers and staff.

The Lifeguards are members of the program staff team at camp. The program staff team plays a crucial role in delivering engaging camp activities and assisting fellow staff with program implementation. In addition to supervising all water activities, lifeguards maintain the waterfront and all equipment, including regular cleaning and safety checks, and provide high quality programming at all times. Lifeguards may also be asked to provide support to counselors and other program staff as needed to enhance the overall camp experience and ensure a safe, supportive environment for all campers.

As with all camp staff, lifeguards must be prepared to spend long days in the sun. The waterfront team is a small group and lifeguards should be prepared to work full days on their feet in all weather conditions.

Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will:

  • Ensure the safety of all campers and staff at the waterfront during all swimming and boating activities
  • Regularly inspect, maintain, and inventory all waterfront equipment. Report issues to the Assistant Coordinator
  • Successfully mitigate the inherent risk associated with camp and waterfront programming.
  • Be familiar with Camp Kanannaq Emergency procedures, and be prepared to assist other waterfront staff in the case of an emergency
  • Work with the other members of the program staff team to accomplish shared responsibilities including site maintenance and program delivery
  • Instruct high quality programming at the waterfront, including boating, swimming, and land activities
  • Be in accordance with all provincial, lifesaving and YMCA standards, policies, and procedures

Qualification-you bring:

  • NL Certification required
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C required
  • Previous experience working as a lifeguard an asset
  • Physical ability to do the duties required
  • Class 2 Drivers License or willingness to obtain (training provided) is considered an asset
  • This position may be funded by Canada Summer Jobs, therefore all successful candidates must meet the grant criteria
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
