The Program

Taproot Community Support Services Community Disability Services team in Westlock works to encourage persons with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges to build on their strengths further develop life skills overcome barriers and becomeinvolvedin their community.
The Position
The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports / supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. This position reports to the Team Leader.
Scheduling :
One (1) permanent part-time position with a weekly schedule of 24 hours
Working three (3) shifts per week which includes working alternate weekends
Shift times run from 0800-1800 except on Wednesdays when the shift will be scheduled from 1800-2200
- REQUIREMENT OF POSITION
Applicants must be physically able to do lifts and transfers for low weight bearing individuals.
In Your Role You Will
Support individuals with household chores life skills personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individuals care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication first aid if / when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
Must be physically fit to assist with lifts and transfers and able to support with personal hygiene and dressing.
Must be self motivated and physically capable of supporting individuals in achieving social and recreational goals including promoting community inclusion through activities such as bingo bowling swimming attending church and other physical or social events.
Previous experience working with developmental disability or mental illness
MUST HAVE - Valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers License; reliable vehicle clean drivers abstract and adequate insurance
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management daily living self-help etc.
ALSO helpful but will train if needed :
First Aid / CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention Medication Administration Abuse Protocol Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety as appropriate.
