Description de poste

MatchBox Consulting Group is partnering with a growing civil construction contracting company, headquartered in Langley, BC, to hire a Controller for a newly created role. Our client is mid-transition from corporate-level accounting to full job costing, rolling out HCSS HeavyBid/HeavyJob, and building formal tracking, reporting, and cost-code structures across the business as it scales past 50 employees.

This is a hands-on, build-it-from-scratch role. You won't be overseeing a job costing function that already exists, you'll be the one standing it up. You'll report directly into leadership with no one more senior in the role above you, and you'll have a bookkeeper and a part-time admin resource supporting you as you build out the function.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run job costing at the accounting level, linking project controls data to the general ledger.
  • Stand up and manage AR/AP tracking by project.
  • Oversee payroll-by-job tracking.
  • Work alongside the Director of Operations and an external tracking/reporting consultant on cost codes and scope codes, ensuring the accounting structure supports them.
  • Manage the relationship with external bookkeepers/accountants as the company shifts from corporate-level to job-level accounting, including coordinating external reviews/audits.
  • Produce monthly financial statements, job cost reports, and cash flow visibility.
  • Select and implement accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage). No accounting software is currently in place, so standing up the right systems is a key priority.
  • Build out payroll and AP/AR systems and processes from the ground up.
  • Build internal controls and accounting policies as the company scales.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting at the project and company level.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation required.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Controller, with previous experience working for a construction company.
  • Direct experience with job costing.
  • Comfortable building processes and systems from scratch rather than just running existing ones.
  • Experience with HCSS is a strong asset but not required; widely used in heavy civil, though this role does not require a heavy civil background specifically.
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working directly with raw project data.
  • High attention to detail.

What's In It for You

  • Competitive salary of $100,000-$140,000, based on experience.
  • Hybrid work arrangement; the company is currently fully remote while it sources a new office in Langley, with flexibility expected to continue once the office opens.
