What is the Opportunity?

Aecon is seeking a Field Engineer to support the delivery of a major infrastructure project in Calgary, Alberta. This site-based position provides an opportunity to play an integral role in the safe and successful execution of complex civil construction activities. Reporting to the Project Manager, the Field Engineer will work closely with Superintendents, project management, subcontractors, and field crews to provide technical and field engineering support throughout construction. The successful candidate will help ensure work is completed in accordance with project drawings, specifications, engineering standards, quality requirements, schedule, and budget. What You'll Do Here:

  • Provide technical and field engineering support to construction crews, Superintendents, and project management.
  • Meet regularly with project crews to review construction activities, production schedules, and upcoming work, ensuring materials, equipment, and resources are available to support planned activities.
  • Coordinate day-to-day construction activities and assist with resolving technical and constructability issues in the field.
  • Review drawings, specifications, shop drawings, contracts, material requirements, and other project documentation to ensure construction activities meet project requirements.
  • Provide technical input into work plans, construction sequencing, scheduling, and look-ahead planning.
  • Identify risks related to construction methods, materials, equipment, resources, or sequencing that could impact safety, quality, schedule, or budget.
  • Perform quantity take-offs, quantity tracking, productivity analysis, and progress measurements to support planning, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Monitor daily construction progress and productivity against project plans, schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Gather and maintain accurate field information, measurements, quantities, production records, and other project documentation.
  • Ensure accurate quantity and cost code information is captured for labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor activities.
  • Assist with cost tracking, forecasting, and reconciliation activities in coordination with project management and finance teams.
  • Communicate significant schedule, productivity, or field issues to project leadership and assist with developing practical solutions.
  • Support the preparation and review of work plans, procedures, RFIs, change documentation, permits, and other technical submissions.
  • Support field layout and construction planning in coordination with construction crews, survey, engineering, and project leadership.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and internal project teams to support construction activities and maintain project schedule.
  • Support quality control activities, including inspections, deficiency tracking, documentation, and verification that completed work meets project drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Initiate and maintain required inspection records, certificates, checklists, and other construction and quality documentation.
  • Assist with the preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly project reports and provide accurate information on progress, quantities, productivity, and field activities.
  • Provide technical support to field staff, craft workers, and subcontractors and assist with the identification and resolution of field issues.
  • Support project close-out activities, including deficiencies, turnover documentation, as-built information, and coordination with the project team and client representatives.
  • Promote and support Aecon's safety culture and ensure work is performed in accordance with project health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to support successful project delivery.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline, or an acceptable combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working as a Field Engineer, Project Coordinator, or in a similar project engineering role, preferably within heavy civil, infrastructure, transportation, utilities, or related construction environments.
  • Knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings and specifications, building materials, and applicable construction standards.
  • Strong understanding of field construction activities, quantity tracking, productivity, cost control, quality management, and project documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and technical documents.
  • Experience supporting construction planning, scheduling, field coordination, and subcontractor management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience with construction software such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, SAP, or similar programs is considered an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Flexibility to work primarily in a site and field environment in the Calgary area and adapt to project work schedules as required.
  • Valid driver's licence.
