Salary Range : Commensurate with experience and education.

Who We Are
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.
The Role
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Justice Sector is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual with expertise in management, policy analysis, and project planning. The Associate Director supports the Director by leading and motivating Justice employees in the successful achievement of sector plans, goals, and objectives.
Reporting to the Director of Justice, the Associate Director has the following key responsibilities :
- Provides updates and shares information regarding planning, policy, funding, and events, etc. within AFN and external to AFN as required.
- Assists the Director with sector functions.
- Supports the Director by overseeing the preparation, coordination, processing, editing, and completion of Sector materials such as briefing notes, speaking notes, PowerPoint presentations, annual reports, quarterly reports, updates, letters, memos, brochures, posters, postcards, e-bulletins, articles, papers, and records of decisions (minutes), invitations, work plans, etc. to be done within specified timelines. All final approved documents to be filed in the record-keeping system – Laserfiche.
- Builds, develops, and maintains strong and productive networks and relationships with national, regional, and community First Nations leaders, specialists, organizations, and communities; and relationships with government officials (federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal).
- Represents the AFN in various forums related to sector issues and matters, promoting the interests of the AFN, enhancing the AFN’s profile, and improving public awareness and understanding.
- Participates in national, regional, and local engagement sessions.
- Supports the Director to align Sector activities with political priorities from the National Chief’s Office and resolutions from Chiefs-in-Assembly.
- Assists in planning, coordinating, and participating in Chiefs-in-Assembly meetings held twice annually in July in different locations and December in the Ottawa area.
- Supports the Director in planning, coordinating, and implementing the Sector’s Chief Committees, Technical Committees, and / or Working Groups.
- Assists with the preparation of sector budget proposals for submission to federal government departments.
- Works with Human Resources and participates in hiring sector staff.
- Conducts other duties as assigned by the Director.
