Reporting to the General Manager, the EHS Manager ensures regulatory compliance and safe, environmentally responsible operations across assigned sites by effectively managing environmental, health, and safety programs; leading incident investigations and risk‑reduction initiatives; supporting workers’ compensation and return‑to‑work processes; and delivering training and coaching that strengthen safety culture and operational accountability. This role partners closely with manufacturing leadership to integrate EHS requirements into daily operations, maintain audit readiness, meet performance objectives, and drive continuous improvement in safety, environmental compliance, and employee engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Management

  • Ensures compliance with Ontario MOL, WSIB, OSHA, EPA, and applicable state and local regulations across multiple facilities.
  • Manages environmental permitting, inspections, and regulatory reporting (air, water, waste).
  • Ensures compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements across sites.
  • Manages hazardous materials and non‑hazardous/hazardous waste programs.
  • Oversees stormwater and wastewater compliance and reporting.
  • Conducts and supports environmental inspections and audits.

Health & Safety Programs

  • Partners with manufacturing leaders to maintain safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplaces.
  • Develops, manages, and executes the annual safety calendar.
  • Leads hazard identification, risk assessments, and risk‑reduction initiatives.
  • Ensures development and maintenance of process safety documentation, including SDS.
  • Monitors employee health exposures, including noise, dust, and other exposure assessments as required.

Incident Management & Risk Mitigation

  • Owns accident and incident investigations, recommends corrective actions, and manages cases to completion across multiple sites.
  • Identifies and implements improvements to environmental, health, and safety systems and procedures.
  • Actively participates in plant operations to resolve safety, quality, cost, and productivity issues.

Workers’ Compensation & Return‑to‑Work

  • Manages WSIB claims, coordinating with physicians, adjudicators, and employees.
  • Oversees safe and timely return‑to‑work plans in compliance with medical restrictions.

Training, Coaching & Capability Building

  • Identifies EHS training needs and delivers training through internal resources or external consultants.
  • Trains and educates employees on safety and environmental procedures, including PPE, LOTO, ergonomics, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Coaches employees and leaders on safe work practices and risk awareness.
  • Transfers technical EHS knowledge to strengthen organizational capability and performance.

Leadership, Governance & Engagement

  • Leads the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) as management chair and guide committee initiatives.
  • Supports safety leadership, employee engagement, and rewards and recognition programs.
  • Conducts area and line audits to reinforce safety standards and accountability.

Enterprise & Multi‑Site Support

  • Partners with the AWI EHS Regional Manager to integrate sites into AWI EHS systems and leading indicators.
  • Provides proactive technical EHS support to multiple sites, including other Canadian locations within the network.
  • Serves as an on‑call EHS site contact as needed.

EH&S Compliance – In partnership with EHS Regional Managers and local/regional regulatory authorities, ensure compliance in the following areas:

  • Air
    • Inspections
    • Reporting
    • Permitting

    • Non-Hazardous waste inspections, compliance & reporting
    • Hazardous waste compliance & reporting

    • Stormwater Compliance and reporting

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Strong working knowledge of Ontario MOL, WSIB, and JHSC requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with EHS regulatory compliance across safety and environmental programs, including air, water, waste, and occupational health.
  • Strong experience with incident investigation, including root cause analysis and 5‑Why methodology.
  • Firsthand experience supporting production operations to maintain compliance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with exposure monitoring (e.g., noise, dust) and core safety programs (risk assessment, LOTO, PPE, ergonomics, hazardous materials, SDS).
  • Ability to manage WSIB/workers’ compensation claims and return-to-work programs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong document management and recordkeeping practices, with the ability to leverage technology to improve accuracy, efficiency, and process consistency.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other operational and EHS performance objectives.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage employees at all levels.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a diverse manufacturing workforce.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to partner with production leaders in support of compliance and improvement initiatives.
  • Organized, analytical, and detail-oriented with strong follow-through and accountability.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  1. Office Environment – This position operates in a professional office environment and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. No PPE is required.

  1. Plant Environment – This position operates in a manufacturing setting and can be subject to extreme cold and hot temperatures; uneven walking surfaces with cords, tools, and other obstacles; intermittent loud noises; and dusty or dirty conditions. Required PPE includes hard hat (when required), safety glasses, earplugs, steel toe/composite boots, and fall protection.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, environmental science, industrial hygiene, engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 5–8+ years progressive EHS experience in manufacturing/industrial environments required (multi-shift strongly preferred).
  • Proven experience with regulatory compliance, audits/inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action management required.
  • Experience managing workers’ compensation/WSIB claims and return-to-work programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering EHS training and coaching leaders and employees preferred.
  • Project management experience, including facilitation skills, preferred.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Professional designation of CSP, ASP/GSP, CRSP or CRST preferred.
