Context

The Ontario Aboriginal HIV / AIDS Strategy (Oahas) is an Indigenous-led organization committed to promoting and supporting healthy, thriving Indigenous communities through providing culturally grounded education and access to harm reduction to reduce the transmission of HIV and other STBBIs in our communities. Oahas operates based on the principles of Greater Involvement of People living with HIV / AIDS (GIPA), Meaningful Engagement of People living with HIV / AIDS (MEPA), nothing about us without us, Indigenous harm reduction, and respect for our cultural knowledges and teachings. These foundational principles guide all aspects of our relationships and work.

Summary

The Facilitator and Resource Developer collaborates with the Training and Resource Development team to lead capacity-building workshops and professional development training sessions for external organizations, focusing mainly on the ASO and Indigenous health and social services sectors. They also create and implement educational resources and materials. The goals of these workshops, trainings and resources includes minimizing barriers to services, enhancing cultural competency in service delivery, reducing stigma in service delivery settings, and raising awareness and advocacy on the harmful effects of colonialism on Indigenous communities, particularly through the lens of blood-borne infections and pathogens, and the more contemporary and ongoing impacts of harmful drug policies.

This position is located in Sudbury, Ontario, and reports to the Team Supervisor, Training and Resource Development Team, with the following areas of key responsibilities : Community Development & Networking, Facilitation & Education Service Delivery, Resource Development, Distribution & Implementation, and Research & Program Evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Community Development & Networking

  • Attend provincially funded meetings for HIV educators (OAN, CATIE and other sector education networks).
  • Develop contacts and networks to procure new clients for Oahas training services.
  • Create marketing materials including print and social media content to promote workshops, training, courses, events or programs to potential clients.

Facilitation & Education Service Delivery

  • Create an empowering environment that celebrates the diversity and visibility of Indigenous peoples living with HIV (IPHAs), Indigenous people who have received a HepC diagnosis (IHCVs) and Indigenous people who use drugs (IPWUDs) as well as Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer and Indigenous LGBT+ folx.
  • Create and facilitate workshop and training activities, incorporating challenging scenarios and assessment tools that are grounded in Indigenous epistemologies and pedagogies.
  • Deliver education sessions to local agencies and groups that serve Indigenous people, with the aim of increasing their capacity to provide culturally grounded harm reduction services and in efforts to better integrate HIV and AIDS prevention services and reduce HIV stigma.
  • Maintain training materials to reflect evolving needs, including updating / creating materials based on sector and community trends and impacts.
  • Identify the organizations internal training and development needs, create new initiatives or improve existing programs, and deliver capacity building training to Oahas staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with Oahas management, staff and community (i.e. Community Advisory Committee or other community groups) to develop educational initiatives and learning products, including training and resources, that strengthen Oahas programs and services.
  • Resource Development, Distribution & Implementation

  • Develop and implement educational resources and campaigns in collaboration with the Training and Resource Development Team, with a focus on adapting and creating content, messaging, visuals and other materials that align with the organizations brand, are relevant to an Indigenous audience, support the principles of Indigenous harm reduction and are inclusive of the diverse identities and experiences of Indigenous peoples.
  • Develop materials, trainings and presentations on a broad range of Indigenous Harm Reduction and HIV-related issues including safer sex, safer drug use, HIV prevention strategies for those living with HIV, e.g., poz prevention, and the harms of colonialism.
  • Adapt existing educational and presentation materials to create online instructional resources, including reviewing, revising, and reformatting content from lessons and modules.
  • Support the integration of new Oahas trainings into e-learning platform opportunities as needed.
  • Collaborate with Oahas teams to understand their resource needs for program and service delivery, and support the development of these materials as needed.
  • Collaborate on the development and design of content updates and communication materials on Oahas website and social media channels.
  • Research & Program Evaluation

  • Access up to date local research and culturally grounded resources to inform the content oftraining and workshops.
  • Create, assess, and refine adult education models, frameworks, and workshops to ensure that desired objectives are met and the training needs of participants are effectively addressed.
  • Identify Oahas learning and education goals, desired training outcomes and learning objectives, and establish assessment standards to evaluate the success of education products and services.
  • Support the development of agency-wide internal standards for training, including auditing existing training delivered across the agency.
  • Identify potential sources of revenue by researching new markets and developing products or services that align with the organizations goals.
  • Administrative & General Duties

  • Collaborate with other members of the Training & Resource Development Team, including maintaining active communication with teammates for a smooth and efficient workflow.
  • Participate on Oahas teams and external committees to communicate information, resolve problems and achieve the goals of the organization in relation to training and resource development.
  • Collaborate with our community partner, Gilbert Centre, to support the onboarding of participants into the Safer Spaces for Two-Spirit People self-guided course on kajabi and regularly review participant completion of the course to generate and issue certificates of completion.
  • Design and issue other training certificates as needed.
  • Ongoing program reporting, data collection, file maintenance and records management, including completing OCHART database entries.
  • Engage in Training and Resource Development program planning through the development of a workplan.
  • Ongoing compliance with Oahas policies and procedures is a requirement for this job.
  • May be required to assist with projects and other agency initiatives.
  • Additional Expectations

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work evenings and weekends on occasion
  • Share in the care and responsibility for Traditional Medicines and bundle items as per protocol
  • Travel throughout the province will be required with advance notice
  • Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and delivering adult education and training.
  • Ability to assess the needs of participants and to meet diverse needs and learning styles.
  • Competency and a good understanding of Indigenous cultures, ways, teachings and history.
  • Thorough understanding of HIV, AIDS, safer sex, and Indigenous harm reduction principles and practices.
  • Prefer a diploma or degree in a relevant field and / or a combination of related experience, prefer qualification in adult education, learning science, Indigenous pedagogies.
  • Lived Experience; Experience working with people living with HIV, and / or people who use drugs and other substances, and Indigenous communities.
  • Ability to speak openly and freely about substance use, sexuality in a sex-positive, non-judgmental manner with service providers, service users and harm reduction workers (peers).
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and respect when communicating with the Indigenous communities, stakeholders, other agencies and external contacts.
  • Ability to work outside regular working hours as required; travel across the province will be required which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Skills

  • Instructional Design, including designing and facilitating workshops and trainings that are accessible to diverse learning styles including best practices for adult education.
