Job Description :

Under the direction of the Chair, Learning and Teaching Services and in coordination and collaboration with the Director of Indigenous Initiatives , the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing programs and initiatives to advance Algonquin’s priority to include Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing in curricula and teaching practices. The professional responsibilities include :

The design / revision / updating of courses, including :

Organizing and conducting individual and group consultations on the integration of Indigenous course content and pedagogical principles of practice;

Assisting with and designing Indigenous-focused courses and programs;

Consulting with program and course administrators and other faculty members, Elders, knowledge keepers, community members, program advisory committees, students, and a variety of potential employers;

Building and maintaining relationships with Elders, knowledge keepers and community members who can provide background and context to Indigenous knowledge through storytelling, artwork, ceremony, teachings and / or any other method;

Defining learning outcomes , activities, assessments and evaluations, and validating these outcomes;

Recommending learning approaches, appropriately aligned resources, etc.;

Reviewing and revising curriculum and facilitating professional development activities;

The provision of academic and educational development leadership, including :

De sign ing and facilitating faculty workshops , communities of practice, and / or educat ional development experiences , as well as facilitating program / curricular consultations;

Working with faculty members to identify and accompany , as necessary, Elders, knowledge keepers and community representatives in the classroom;

Maintaining close relationships with the Director of Indigenous Initiatives , the Mamidosewin Centre , and the Indigenous Education Council;

Conducting professional development activities on decolonization and indigenization for faculty specific to the provision of academic programming;

Developing online and or experiential Indigenous learning content and programming related to Indigenous Knowledge, practices , and methodologies;

Liaising with and providing guidance to faculty on various Indigenous pedagogical approaches and literature / resources;

Building a repository of resources on Indigenous Knowledges, practices , and methodologies;

Participating in other activities within the mandate of Learning and Teaching Services, particularly in providing service to faculty on course design and development, course delivery, assessment development, and teaching and learning strategies;

Participating in curriculum and other consultative committees, hiring committees , and departmental / faculty meetings;

Liaising with community members, engaging in program, Department, School or Faculty, and College promotion;

Remaining current in the field of study and maintaining awareness of emerging trends and practices related to teaching and learning in higher education modeling the College values – Caring. Learning. Integrity. Respect.

Required Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree in education or a related field of study required , Master’s Degree preferred ; or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through post-secondary Indigenous pedagogy / curriculum development ( please indicat e the equivalency in your cover letter );

Minimum three (3) years of teaching experience, or equivalent;

Must have successfully completed two or more curriculum projects or program development projects with Indigenous content;

Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous pedagogical methodologies preferably in a postsecondary setting;

Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities;

Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum and public education materials as well as familiarity with issues pertaining to curriculum;

Capacity to engage members of diverse identities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols , and strategies;

Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication (oral and written), research and team building skills;

Experience in training, planning, preparing , and delivering workshops and obtaining feedback;

Strong knowledge of Indigenous values, pedagogies, nations , and communities;

Strong organization, prioritization skills and ability to manage workload;

Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting;

Experience in the development and delivery of hybrid and online curriculum would be considered an asset.

Algonquin College operates programs on a 12-month basis; faculty may be assigned accordingly.
