Description

Reporting to the Managing Partner, the Controller is responsible for providing leadership to the accounting team and acting as a business partner to the lawyers and management. In addition to overseeing the accounting operations under their responsibility, the incumbent actively supports the Managing Partner in financial analysis, budgeting, and certain tax obligations specific to law firms.

The role involves a significant focus on serving attorneys, particularly regarding billing, collections, trust accounts, and financial reports generated by the Maître system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participation in the preparation of financial statements and other analyses
  • Support the Managing Director in preparing budgets, financial forecasts, and performance analysis
  • Manage, supervise, and develop the accounting team (8 people)
  • Serve as a resource for lawyers on all matters related to billing, collections, accounts payable, trust transactions, and financial reports generated by the Maître system
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director in calculating and monitoring partner compensation
  • Ensure the preparation of tax statements, including T5013 forms
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of accounting and financial processes
  • Assist the General Manager with special projects
  • Perform any other related tasks associated with the role

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Hold a CPA designation (an asset)

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in accounting and finance
  • Team management experience
  • Experience working in a law firm or professional services firm (strong asset)
  • Experience in a project-based accounting environment (an asset)

Skills

  • Excellent understanding of legal billing processes and trust accounts
  • Strong expertise in financial analysis and budgeting
  • Knowledge of tax obligations related to partnerships (T5013)
  • Proficiency in accounting systems, ideally Master
  • Very strong proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools
  • Bilingualism in both spoken and written English
