Senior Electrical Engineer – Generation Stations

Location: Burnaby, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: Hybrid

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer – Generation Stations to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will provide detailed electrical design and technical leadership for generation station projects, supporting projects from engineering design through construction, testing, and commissioning.

The successful candidate will bring strong experience with switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, grounding, lighting, power cables, and station service power systems, along with the ability to act as a Professional of Record (PoR) and provide technical direction to other engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed designs and documentation for electrical systems and equipment within generation stations.

• Provide detailed design and technical leadership for:

  • Switchgear

  • Transformers

  • Circuit breakers

  • Grounding and lightning protection

  • Lighting systems

  • Power cables

  • Station service power supply systems

• Develop detailed design packages including equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, cable schedules, material lists, and external connection drawings.

• Prepare engineering documentation including evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design bases, calculations, hazard logs, and test plans.

• Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record.

• Develop design work packages, including scope, duration, and level-of-effort estimates.

• Perform technical reviews of designs prepared by other engineering professionals.

• Conduct condition assessments of facility equipment and systems and provide recommendations to address identified deficiencies.

• Perform engineering calculations including grounding, arc flash, short-circuit, and cable design studies.

• Provide technical support during equipment installation, construction, and commissioning.

• Conduct field reviews as required.

• Prepare and review inspection and test plans for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).

• Develop commissioning test plans and requirements documentation.

• Prepare technical specifications for tendering, evaluate submissions, and provide recommendations for contract awards.

• Coordinate multiple projects and manage engineering resources, schedules, scope, and costs.

• Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience.

• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or registered in another jurisdiction and eligible for registration with EGBC.

• Ability to provide signed and sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record.

• Access to an appropriate EGBC Permit to Practice prior to commencing the assignment.

• Strong electrical engineering design experience involving generation stations or similar complex electrical facilities.

• Experience with electrical equipment including switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, grounding systems, power cables, lighting, and station service systems.

• Experience with engineering calculations such as grounding studies, arc flash studies, short-circuit analysis, and cable design.

• Experience managing engineering design tasks including scope, schedule, cost, estimating, and project administration.

• Ability to prepare technical specifications, evaluate tenders, and provide award recommendations.

• Strong technical writing, communication, analytical, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

• Familiarity with CAD systems, drawing standards, and standard engineering design and analysis software.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with hydroelectric generation or other power generation facilities.

• Knowledge of power system planning and system operations.

• Knowledge of protection and control engineering.

• Experience providing technical leadership during construction, equipment installation, testing, and commissioning.

• Knowledge and application of Canadian electrical standards including CSA and ULC.

• Familiarity with international standards including IEEE and IEC.

• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary projects and engineering resources.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a technically strong electrical engineer who can independently manage detailed design assignments while also providing leadership to junior engineers and multidisciplinary project teams. They will be comfortable solving complex engineering problems, developing practical solutions, coordinating multiple projects, and supporting work in the field from design through commissioning.
