Position : Manager, Wood Measurements
Location : Kapuskasing, ON
GreenFirst is looking for a Manager, Wood Measurements to manage the scaling operations at all the Ontario divisions. Reporting directly to the Chief Forester, you will oversee weight scales, carrying out the wood measurement and sampling program, ensuring adherence to procedures and quality objectives while managing and overseeing the maintenance of the weigh scales, and data entry systems.

- Monitor sample plans for compliance and amend a necessary.
- Supervise divisional scalers for scaling accuracy and ensure that they adhere to all applicable safety policies.
- Calibrate scales for wood measurement staff and implement any required corrections.
- Monitor scalers to ensure their log quality assessments are accurate and consistent.
- Complete any required analysis or data compilation on scale and quality data.
- Work closely with sawmill and forest operations personnel to ensure the efficient processing of material through the weigh scale system.
- Liaise with Government officials, negotiate scaling agreements, manage yard requests and review sampling factors.
- Liaise with woodlands and sawmill personnel in relation to all wood measurement activities.
- Support accounting department on contractor payment issues, investigate and resolve issues.
- Provide annual wood measurement budget, create capital expenditures, submit requests for major projects.
- Conduct quality sampling of round wood received at the sawmill.
- Provide training for log scaling and log quality assessments to log yard personnel, woodland personnel, sawmill yard supervisors, and harvest contractors.
- Review round wood monthly inventory in each sawmill.
- Conduct sample scaling for the calculation of weight to volume factors.
- Maintain an accurate round wood inventory.
- Ensure that all government and company statutes, rules and regulations with respect to scaling are carried out satisfactorily.
- Ensure that scalers trained truck drivers on the use of the weigh scaler system in accordance with operating procedures.
- Ensure and validate accuracy of the daily load receipts.
- Provide support to all Ontario scaling operations, ensuring sampling program and log yards inventories are well executed by sawmill staff / personnel.
- College Diploma in Forestry, Forest Technician or equivalent.
- Possession of a valid Ontario Scaling license.
- Minimum 5 years experience in scaling.
- Bilingualism (English & French) would be an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel
- Possession of a valid driver’s license
- Must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions.
- Excellent leadership, analytical, organizational skills.
- Must be willing and able to regularly travel to all mills in Ontario.
