About the Opportunity
Currently, the Law Society is seeking a full-time Auditor to join our team, on an 18-month contract . This is a hybrid work position; however, the successful candidate must reside in the Lower Mainland and be able to travel within BC .

Responsibilities
- Conduct Compliance Audits to assess lawyers’ compliance with the trust accounting rules and to identify potential misconduct issues or misuse of the trust account related to financial matters
- Review law firms’ records for non-compliance with the Legal Profession Act, Law Society Rules, and the Code of Professional Conduct for British Columbia and identify potential fraud and money laundering
- Use data analytics and professional judgment to assess key areas of focus and implement tailored audit procedures as necessary
- Engage in thoughtful, purposeful interviews with lawyers and accounting staff to understand firm processes and clarify key audit details
- Evaluate explanations and documentation with professional skepticism to ensure accuracy and reliability
- Conduct complex investigative audits in areas of serious concerns, including anti-money laundering
- Operate independently and ensure work is completed to schedule and meets high-quality standards
- Prepare clear, well-reasoned reports that communicate audit findings in a factual and impartial manner
- Present audit results to lawyers, providing constructive feedback and practical recommendations for resolving deficiencies
- Provide recommendations to lawyers on how to remedy any deficiencies identified during the audit, when appropriate
- Draft detailed memos to refer serious audit findings to the Professional Conduct department and provide oral evidence supporting the referral when required
- Review annual Trust Report submissions and assess law firm compliance with the Division 7 Rules
- Draft correspondence related to trust reporting, shortages, cash breaches, storage modifications, and other compliance matters
- Respond to inquiries from the legal profession on topics including trust accounting practices, rule interpretations, and compliance requirements
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of audit methodology and reference tools such as the Trust Accounting Handbook
- Support a collaborative team culture through open knowledge exchange and mutual support
- Conduct new firm visits to provide guidance on trust fund procedures and help firms establish sound practices from the outset
- Other duties as the Director, Trust Assurance may require
Qualifications
To qualify, you will need at least 5+ years of experience in auditing in public practice and / or accounting for law firms . It is essential that you have a high level of professional judgment, excellent written and communication skills, and an outstanding ability to convey a message.
A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation with CPABC is required, however, candidates who have taken their exams and are in the final stages of administrative processing or undergoing inter-provincial transfer to obtain local CPA accreditation will be considered.
Skills, experience, and background in the following are required :
Additional designations such as CFE or CIA are desirable, but not required.
As travel is required, the successful candidate must have access to a reliable vehicle and a valid BC driver’s licence.
