The Science Operations Department at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for the position of Technical Services Supervisor (Technical Specialist V). This position is a full-time two-year term AUPE position that offers 35 hour of work per week (1.0 FTE).
The Technical Services Supervisor will report to the Director of Science Operations and will be responsible for daily oversight and operation of the technical services space in the new Science Commons building (SA6302) at the University of Lethbridge in accordance with applicable safety regulations (institutional, provincial, federal, and international).
Technical Services includes a vast array of wood working (table saw, radial arm saw, mitre saw, chop saw, band saw, sanders, drill press), metal working (lathe, mill, grinder, brake, bend, hydraulic press, shear, band saw), welding (MIG welder, TIG welder, Stick welder, spot welder, plasma cutter), and electronics (solder rework station, various soldering pencils, power supplies, oscilloscopes, frequency generators and sweep meters, spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer) equipment.
This position provides troubleshooting, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair services to all disciplines within the Faculty of Arts and Science. This person will work closely with the MR Facility technician who provides support with any of the above-mentioned activities related to advanced electronics. The supervisor will also provide design and fabrication skills and services to students and staff. The supervisor will be responsible for developing and overseeing the equipment maintenance, safety, and training program for technical services, including providing the appropriate training, assistance in the proper use of equipment, carrying out required equipment maintenance, and record management.
The supervisor will also be responsible for the financial management of technical services including the following :
- 1) purchasing and inventory management of spare parts / consumables for technical services;
- 2) billing users for use of technical service, both internal and external to the University;
- 3) tracking of projects including reporting on costs and labour requirements;
4) monthly inventory and financial reconciliations.
A good and working relationship with internal users / customers is essential.

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification review for Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) positions. As such, the classification level currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project. Position Qualifications The successful candidate should have a college diploma / certificate in one of the following trades : carpentry, plumbing, millwright, or electronics / electrician. A proven track record of successful collaboration is essential. Experience with financial management, as well as protocol development and training is considered an asset.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) and must be able to work independently and as part of a team within a fast-paced environment where problem solving, multi-tasking, and strict deadlines are required. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated experience interpreting, applying, and communicating policies and procedures to others in an ever-changing environment. Attention to detail, excellent planning and organization skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the University Community are critical for success in this position.
A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required. Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,291.00 - $5,990.00 monthly Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $5,291.00 - $6,687.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 12)
