About the Role
Southland Trailers is hiring a Manufacturing Automation Engineer to design and develop custom automated equipment and machinery to support our production operations.
This role is hands‑on and cross‑functional. You will design custom machines from concept through commissioning, create detailed drawings for fabrication, and develop PLC ladder logic to control automated systems. You’ll work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and production‑ready automation solutions.
What You'll Do :
- Design and develop custom automated manufacturing equipment and machinery
- Create and maintain 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks (preferred)
- Produce 2D drawings, including flat patterns for laser cutting, forming, and fabrication
- Develop, program, and debug ladder logic (PLC) for custom automation systems
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems into machine designs
- Support machine commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement efforts
- Work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to optimize automation solutions
- Create and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, schematics, and control logic documentation
- Ensure designs comply with safety standards, manufacturing best practices, and company standards
What We're Looking For :
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a 2‑year Engineering Diploma with extensive, relevant work experienceP.Eng / C.E.T. designation preferred, or actively working toward obtaining it4–8 years of experience in manufacturing automation, machine design, or related engineering rolesExperience designing and supporting custom automated machineryProficiency in PLC ladder logic programming for industrial or custom‑built equipmentHands‑on, practical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and control system issuesPositive, proactive attitude toward continuous improvement and upgrading manufacturing systemsStrong interest in modern automation technologies and willingness to learn and apply new toolsAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teamsComfortable spending time on the shop floor during builds, testing, and commissioningStrong organizational and documentation skillsSafety‑focused approach to machine design and automation implementationWhy You’ll Love Working Here?
