Our Canadian Mechanical Lead will be responsible for mentoring, managing and ensuring the safety of our on-site and travelling locomotive mechanics across Alberta and Saskatchewan as well as managing our 3rd party contractors. This role will effectively manage our assets and drive high reliability through scheduled preventative maintenance, proactive repairs to drive and establishing timely and consistent procurement partners. The Canadian Mechanical Lead will drive the schedule of the mechanics to priority areas, assist in trouble shooting and provide hands-on leadership to increase skills and knowledge. They will also be responsible to ensuring absolute adherence to safety procedures and policies across the Mechanical team and in the areas they work in.

Position can be based in Edmonton or Saskatoon.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Establishes a prioritization system for maintenance and repairs, scheduling mechanics as required
  • Manages various 3rd party contactors to coordinate repairs
  • Reviews current locomotive inventory, previous repairs and parts inventory and proactively manages necessary supplies
  • Establishes standard work tools required and ensures mechanic’s inventory is available, maintained and tracked
  • Participates in reviews of incoming locomotives to determine necessary parts and tools required to ensure full working order when arriving on site
  • Ensures accurate record keeping, including defects, repairs and costs
  • Using data collected, create baseline reports and determine improvement opportunities in defect- repair time, parts order-arrive time, reduction in unexpected repairs, reduction of travel time and adherence to PM schedule
  • Creates AFEs as required for parts and submit for approval. Track the ordering, shipping and receipt of parts to ensure timely repair
  • Provides quality customer relations; interfaces with operations teams on site
  • Participate in the review of the Locomotive Mechanic safety procedures and processes. Perform regular audits to ensure adherence and consistency
  • Conduct regular hazard assessments of existing and new work sites to identify any changing conditions and to improve on-site safety for the team
  • Establish mechanic qualifications, determine required training to progress qualifications, provide / find providers of training and track qualifications
  • Ensure required certifications are up-to-date, including customer site-specific items
  • Partner with Regional Mechanics and Mechanic lead in the US to determine best practices and increase team learning opportunities.
  • Recommend / use fleet management software
  • Using data collected, establishes a yearly budget of anticipated repairs and maintenance.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :

  • High School diploma
  • 10+ years of relative experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in locomotive electrical and mechanical repairs and maintenance.
  • Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
  • Experience creating a schedule and managing a team
  • Skills :

  • Ability to carry out production planning and meet Workplace Safety & Health standards
  • General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
  • Hold and maintain safety critical medical status including clear drug and alcohol testing; valid driver's license is required
  • Ability to work indoors / outdoors in all weather conditions with tolerance to fumes and odors
  • Willingness to address emergency service problems at any time of day or night
  • Intermediate data and analytical skills to collect and interpret data to drive actions
  • Must be a person of integrity, capable of excellent judgement and decision-making skills, showing the utmost discretion in the management of confidential corporate information and in the tone and words used to convey information

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS :

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legislation, governmental regulations and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    REASONING ABILITY :

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
