Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Activities Consultant, the Therapeutic Recreation Assistant is responsible for the direct provision of recreation and leisure programming to enhance the quality of life for patients. The role also involves collaboration with the Recreation and Leisure Programmer to plan, evaluate, and implement recreation and leisure programs tailored to patients and residents.

Qualifications

• Post‑secondary diploma in Recreation and Leisure, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology or a comparable combination of education and experience providing recreation programming to seniors with various physical and cognitive impairments or limitations.
• Preferred : Eligible for registration or a member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario.
• Previous experience providing recreation programming to seniors with physical and cognitive impairments or limitations.
• Experience in Geriatrics, Cognitive Support, Palliative Care, and Rehabilitation.
• Advanced understanding of dementia and a thorough knowledge of “Responsive Behaviours” and behavioural expression as a form of communication.
• Proven experience in group facilitation.
• Sound knowledge of motivational strategies to optimize patient participation and performance.
• Experience developing adaptations to recreation activities appropriate for various disabilities.
• Knowledge of recreation and leisure interventions suitable for patient groups.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Above‑average interpersonal skills, organization, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and interdependently in a multidisciplinary, inter‑professional setting.
• Initiative, enthusiasm, and high energy.
• Flexibility to adapt quickly to patients’ needs and abilities.
• Demonstrated satisfactory performance record.

Conditions of Employment

The terms and conditions of employment are set by the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and C.U.P.E Local 6364.
