Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join the Mental Health Substance Use Inpatient Units (Segal Building levels 5, 6, 7, 8) and Psychiatric Assessment Unit teams at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Apply today to join our team!

As a Clinical Nurse Educator at VCH, you will :

  • Provide complete clinical educational services including training / staff development decisions, and planning, implementing and evaluating clinical educational programs using advanced theory and knowledge of content area and adult education principles.
  • Consult, confer, and collaborate with other Clinical Educators, Nursing, Patient Services Managers, interdisciplinary team members and other care / clinical groups as appropriate, in resolution of clinical education and hospital-wide psychiatric educational issues, and in coordinating activities required for each education assignment.
  • Ensure that team goals and mission relative to clinical education for area are achieved by planning, setting priorities, organizing, consulting and coordinating with others.
  • Measure performance and take corrective action with respect to individual and group learning needs.

About the Services at Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre - Mental Health & Substance Use Inpatient Units

The Segal Psychiatric Inpatient Units are located on Levels 5 to 8 in the Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre at Vancouver General Hospital. Psychiatric inpatient services provide assessment and treatment to adults who require acute 24-hour management in a hospital setting. There are 75 beds focused on clients who require longer-term, intensive treatment to return to their community. The length of stay is approximately five to 12 days.

The Segal Psychiatric Inpatient Units include :

  • Brief Intervention Unit – Segal 5th floor
  • Mood Disorders – Segal 6th floor
  • Inpatient Psychiatry – Segal 7th floor
  • Inpatient Psychiatry & Concurrent Disorders – Segal 8th floor
  • About the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU) at VGH

    The Psychiatric Assessment Unit at Vancouver General Hospital is a 14-bed short stay unit focused on clients who require short term, intensive treatment to return to their community, with length of stay being approximately three days. At PAU, Nurses support patients with their physical and mental health needs as well as day-to-day activities. The PAU team endeavors to provide a safe place that promotes acute psychiatric stabilization for patients in a comforting, caring and holistic environment.

    Qualifications

    Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Three (3) years' recent, related nursing experience in an acute psychiatric environment including one (1) years’ experience in client education and / or group facilitation, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of nursing science theory, and practice within a patient centred care model.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the BCCNM standards of practice for Registered Nurses or Registered Psychiatric Nurses.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental health nursing theory and practice, and the standards of the Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses.
  • Broad knowledge of community mental health services, resources, and referral procedures
  • Knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
  • Ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and coach.
  • Ability to develop educational programs and material.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, physicians, other health care staff and patients and their families, either one-on-one and in groups.
  • Ability to function as a team member, leader, and facilitator.
  • Ability to provide leadership to customers.
  • Ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to provide effective consultation.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to operated related equipment such as personal computers and database / statistical software.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Skill in the use of equipment, and in techniques appropriate to Psychiatry.

    The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

    As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
