Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) Shift Manager
As the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) Shift Manager, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient execution of underground construction activities, aligning with OTG's commitment to excellence and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of excavation projects for SEM Excavation and Lining Scope of Work.
- Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations throughout all excavation phases, including implementing ventilation design at different stages of excavation, coordinating with Site Teams to maintain ventilation equipment, and regularly carrying out gas and air monitoring as described in the ventilation plan.
- Implement tunnel safety protocols, conduct regular safety inspections and audits, coordinate with emergency services and response teams, and stay up-to-date with industry best practices and technological advancements.
- Collaborate with SEM Manager and Superintendent to manage shift schedules and rotation for tunnel shift engineers and crews, ensure adequate staffing, conduct handover briefings / debriefings, and address issues during shift changes.
- Obtain and maintain necessary daily / weekly permits and approvals (e.g., daily Permit To Tunnel (PTT) or Required Excavation Support Sheet (RESS)); review and verify encountered and forecast rock conditions, geotechnical data, instrumentation and monitoring results, tests, and safety hazards to mitigate risks and optimize sequence outcomes.
- Implement SEM techniques to ensure safe and controlled excavation processes, including Roadheaders, Tunnel Excavators, Robot Drilling Machines, and Shotcrete equipment for primary support.
- Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to develop detailed excavation plans, ensuring adherence to project specifications and timelines.
- Oversee procurement of necessary equipment, materials, and resources for excavation activities.
- Manage and supervise excavation crews, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and quality standards.
- Participate in the selection process of new crew members and provide recommendations for promotions or disciplinary actions as needed.
- Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, providing regular updates on project progress and addressing issues as they arise.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including excavation logs, reports, and records of change orders; collaborate with the project management team for seamless integration of excavation activities with overall project objectives.
- Provide daily production reports and review shift supervisor reports; summarize weekly / monthly production reports and analyses and propose improvements for management review.
- Support cost and material tracking with the SEM Manager to assist end-of-month forecasts, accruals, and cost reporting.
Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years of experience in underground infrastructure projects, with a focus on Sequential Excavation Management and experience with Roadheaders or Tunnel Excavators for excavation and hydraulic formwork for permanent concrete lining.Strong understanding of excavation techniques, ground support systems, and tunneling methods.Proficiency in project management software and tools; cost and production management experience including weekly / monthly cost reporting and forecasts.Ability to implement, maintain, and develop project safety requirements and foster a safety culture within the team.Excellent leadership and communication skills; ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.Solid knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations related to excavation and construction.Problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.Additional Information
