Disability Claims Specialist – Pacific Blue Cross

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional disability claims services to clients and applicants, reviewing and analyzing claim information from multiple sources.
  • Determine eligibility and adjudicate short‑term disability claims, initiating referrals or escalation to other internal or external disability resources when required.
  • Prepare and present pending short‑term disability claims and recommendations to the disability team for discussion, supporting findings and justifying acceptance or denial of claim.
  • Monitor and update active claims on an ongoing basis, communicating claims‑related decisions directly to clients and applicants and composing written correspondence.
  • Generate payments for approved short‑term disability claims, verifying salary, deductions, offsets, and ensuring accurate and timely benefit payments.

Job Duties (Adjudication & Assessment)

  • Review, analyze, and investigate claims and history / conditions of claimants to determine eligibility information from various sources, requesting and documenting additional information as necessary.
  • Interpret and apply contract wording, medical documentation, claims policies and procedures, statutory requirements and other guidelines affecting valuation and disposition of short‑term disability claims.
  • Initiate regular telephone contact with claimants, policy‑holders, employers, doctors, lawyers and other stakeholders to gather additional information and determine level of functioning, accommodation status and return‑to‑work options.
  • Plan and compose written correspondence and documents adhering to established communication standards.
  • Adjudicate claims, key data into processing systems, document all contacts, process payments, maintain files, and refer claims to other stakeholders when needed.
  • Act as liaison with Finance on third‑party claims ensuring overpayments identified, followed up, and manually calculating amounts owing on a case‑by‑case basis.
  • Identify and calculate amounts for recovery from overpayments, communicating amounts and expectations for repayment to all affected parties and following up to ensure collection.

  • Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Completion of a 1‑year Disability Management Diploma (288 hours) or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in basic Word and Excel.
  • Typing skills of 40 wpm.
  • At least 2 years of related experience, including 1 year in a Disability Claims Administrator, Work & Wellness or Benefit Representative role.
  • Demonstrated decision‑making and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
