Overview
As a member of the military, Training Development Officers provide guidance and advice on the systematic approach to training and education and the Canadian Forces Individual Training and Education System.
As experts in military training, education, and professional development programs, Training Development Officers are responsible for ensuring quality and quantity control of training, guiding the development, management, and delivery of training solutions, teaching in various settings, and managing learning resources. They also conduct human performance research, analyze operational job performance requirements, identify organizational needs, and facilitate solutions to performance issues.
Work environment
Training Development Officers typically work in an office environment at CAF schools, units, bases, commands, or at National Defence Headquarters. They may also be deployed in support of military operations or missions. If joining the Regular Force, you will be assigned to your first base after training, with potential relocations. If joining the Primary Reserve Force, you will serve part-time at a Reserve unit in your community, with opportunities for full-time employment and voluntary relocations or deployments.
Entry plans
The preferred degree is a Master’s in Education with three years of full-time experience as an educational or training consultant. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience may be considered for direct placement into on-the-job training following Basic Military Officer Qualification. The CAF also offers a Regular Officer Training Plan, including full funding for a bachelor’s degree at the Royal Military College System, with military service obligations.
Training
Initial training includes 12 weeks of basic officer training in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, and first aid. Language training may follow. Training Development Officers then undergo five months of specialized training in Borden, Ontario, and about three months of on-the-job training. Opportunities for further specialization and graduate training are available.
Part time options
This role is available part-time with the Primary Reserve across Canada, involving service in local units, with options for full-time contracts, deployments, and volunteer relocations.

Training is adapted to reserve members’ schedules, utilizing various instructional strategies, including formal courses, mentoring, and assessments. Prior learning recognition may be available.
Reserve members serve part-time, earning 92.8% of Regular Force pay, with benefits and pension contributions.
