Overview :

The Summer Transition Peer Assistant is responsible for assisting the Transition Program Coordinator with the development and implementation of the transition programs offered to first year students with a diagnosed and documented disability. Currently, Student Accessibility Services (SAS) offers four transition programs.

Partnership with Smart Start (Brock University’s academic orientation program)- Students will meet and attend a group presentation on SAS and discuss their disability related concerns while they are on campus for the Smart Start program. For further information on Smart Start program dates, please see the following link : Bridge to Brock Conference (3 full days)- this program is designed for students with a diagnosed and documented disability. This program allows for students to stay on campus overnight. The Transitions Peer Assistant will stay overnight in Residence to chaperone students. Bridge to Brock Conference (1 day)- this program is designed for students with a diagnosed and documented disability. Bridge to Brock Online Content and Information- Sessions from the in-person experience available to students via Brightspace asynchronously. Monitored by the Transitions Peer Assistant for questions or concerns from the students. The Summer Transitions Peer Assistant will work relatively closely with the Transitions Program Coordinator, they are also required to work independently on specific projects. The Summer Transitions Peer Assistant is also required to interact and correspond with prospective students, prospective parents, student peers, volunteers, and staff within the Brock Community. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is critical in this position. The successful candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

Role :

  • Scheduling and coordinating students involvement / transition between the in-person Smart Start program and the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Transitions program in conjunction with the Transitions Program Coordinator.
  • Work in conjunction with the Smart Start staff to facilitate the transition between the Smart Start program and student’s attending the SAS presentation.
  • Facilitating students’ participation in SAS Transitions program / processes, for example : assisting students with how to register for courses, orientation to Brock, finding campus locations etc.
  • Assisting with the management and development of a prospective student / Bridge to Brock student data base.
  • Developing new conference activities such as : ice-breaker / introduction activities, offsite excursion, campus orientation activities for the transition programs offered.
  • Assist in the training of student volunteers for the Bridge to Brock Conference. (3 day and 1 day option).
  • In conjunction with the Transitions Program Coordinator, oversee conference volunteer staff during evening activities, residence, and off campus excursions.
  • Stay overnight in Brock’s residence during the Bridge to Brock (3-day conference) to supervise, support student volunteers, and student participants.
  • Correspondence with program volunteers and various staff.
  • Respond to perspective student / parent questions.
  • Assist the Transitions Program Coordinator with all aspects of the 1 and 3-day Bridge to Brock Conferences.
  • Preparing informational correspondence to prospective students and to students who have accepted offers of admissions to Brock University.
  • Assisting with the day-to-day service delivery during the Spring and Summer terms.
  • Develop programming evaluations for the various transition programs offered in conjunction with the Transition Program Coordinator.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (will be required to work the Smart Start Saturday and a Sunday evening as needed).

Qualifications :

  • Upper Year Brock Student who is responsible and dependable.
  • Computer Skills, Word / Excel, Brock interfaces (e-mail, Brightspace).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with parents, students, faculty and staff are required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Awareness of disability related concerns in the post-secondary educational environment.
  • Conference planning and organizational skills
  • Time Management skills including the ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Project management skills—marketing.
  • Ability to collaborate with Brock community partners to facilitate successful programming.
  • Familiarity with the Student Accessibility Services and programs would be an asset.
