Job description

ABOUT US : Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) is a registered non-profit charity located in Calgary Alberta helping over 4000 animals find loving adoptive homes each year. Our mission is to rescue and rehome animals in need and provide community support programs that help people and their pets.

The Role : The Behaviour Coordinator is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of behaviour cases including implementing training plans supporting fosters and working directly with the addition part of the responsibility for all Behaviour Coordinators is to provide ongoing education for foster homes and volunteers. Having both a love of people and animals you are naturally optimistic positive friendly and approachable. You enjoy working with dogs and their humans in a positive way for positive outcomes. At heart you strive to see every animal find a loving home balancing the needs of the animal organization and the public. You are confident open minded and non-judgmental with an intuitive ability to see possibilities. Your strengths include implementation of rehabilitation and training programs for dogs with behavioural challenges and you love problem-solving behavioural concerns to increase adoptability. You take great personal satisfaction from every successful adoption.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS :

Genuine interest in animal welfare with understanding of dog behaviour.

Emotional resilience to handle difficult or stressful situations.

Highly developed cooperation collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Moderate level of office software proficiency in MS Word Excel Email Google Docs and databases.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Self-motivated; has the ability to set priorities and manage workloads with minimal supervision.

Be comfortable handling dogs including working with dogs that have complex behaviours.

Maintain the highest standards of care using positive reinforcement in a fast paced environment.

Ability to cultivate positive relationships through patience a positive attitude and adaptability.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES :

Work collaboratively with other Behaviour Coordinators on all aspects of the dog behaviour program.

Maintain evaluate and continuously improve behaviour and enrichment programs to ensure high standards of care stress reduction and overall wellbeing for dogs in shelter care.

Complete behavioural assessments on dogs and develop individualized behaviour plans to support their progress and adoptability.

Record and maintain detailed notes and updates in PetPoint ensuring all behavioural information is current and accurately documented.

Collaborate closely with other department team members to support the enrichment and behaviour needs of all dogs in shelter care.

Work directly with foster homes including in-home visits as needed (may require travel outside the City of Calgary).

Provide ongoing training guidance and support to volunteers and foster homes involved in the behaviour program.

Increase adoptability of dogs through targeted behavioural modification training and enrichment strategies.

Manage track and fully document behavioural cases ensuring timely follow-up and coordination with other departments as needed.

Build and maintain relationships with external partners such as dog trainers training facilities and behaviour specialists to expand available resources and strengthen post-adoption support.

Utilize supervise train and mentor volunteers to assist effectively with behaviour department duties.

Support adopters with post-adoption behaviour or training concerns by providing advice via phone and email or referring to appropriate local resources and training options.

Develop and update training materials including documents handouts and presentations for volunteers staff and adopters as well as content for social media and the website.

Assist the Director of Programs with other related tasks as assigned.

Education / Training :

Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.

Certified Professional Dog Trainer Knowledge Assessed through Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT) OR currently working toward the designation is considered an asset but not required.

Minimum one-year experience working with dogs in a professional capacity and / or shelter environment.

Other Requirements :

Valid drivers license.

Working Conditions :

Office environment within a busy animal shelter with a moderate to loud noise level.

The position may involve exposure to dangerous and / or diseased animals.

Ability to walk reach overhead and lift up to 50lbs.

Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Details :

Position : Permanent Part-Time

Shifts : 16-24 Hours per week. 8-hour shifts Flexible schedule to accommodate business needs.

Location : 5060 74 Ave SE Calgary AB T2C 3C9. On-site
