The role:

We are building the next generation of real-time, programmable payment rails and are looking for an experienced Blockchain engineer to join our team. The Blockchain Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and integration of distributed ledger and tokenization solutions that support the Bank’s digital currency and next-generation payments initiatives. This role focuses on delivering secure, scalable, and enterprise-grade technology solutions aligned with the Bank’s architectural standards, security requirements, and regulatory obligations.

The Blockchain Engineer works collaboratively with architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and business teams to ensure solutions are scalable, production-ready and support the Bank’s long-term technology strategy.

What will you do?

• Design, develop, and maintain technology components supporting tokenized deposits and digital currency use cases.
• Integrate modern distributed ledger technology stacks with core banking systems, payment engines, ledger platforms, and enterprise APIs.
• Ensure solutions meet enterprise requirements for security, resiliency, scalability, and performance.
• Build and manage smart contracts, including token lifecycle logic, transaction validation, and exception handling.
• Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to align designs with approved standards and target-state architectures.
• Partner with Cybersecurity and Infrastructure teams to implement secure key management, access controls, and monitoring capabilities.
• Support testing, deployment, and operational readiness activities in accordance with Scotiabank’s change management processes.
• Contribute to proof-of-concepts, pilots, and controlled production releases.
• Maintain technical documentation to support operational support, audits, and knowledge transfer.

What do you need to succeed?

Mandatory

• Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience, including exposure to distributed or high-availability systems.
• Practical experience with:
• Blockchain or distributed ledger platforms (permissioned or enterprise-focused)
• Smart contract implementations
• API-driven and microservices-based architectures
• Strong understanding of security principles, including cryptography, key management, and transaction integrity.
• Strong knowledge of blockchain fundamentals like consensus, finality, gas optimization
• Experience delivering solutions in regulated or highly controlled environments.
• A self-starter with problem solving and collaboration skills

Nice to Have:

• Experience integrating blockchain or emerging technology solutions into legacy core banking or payment platforms.
• Experience with Smart Contract use cases like Settlement, Liquidity, Trading, Risk Management
• Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to payments processing, settlement systems, or financial market infrastructure.
• Experience supporting initiatives subject to regulatory review, audit, or enhanced governance.
