The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is committed to achieving a qualified workforce that reflects the diverse communities it serves and a work environment of inclusion and respect. This is a designated position for an African Nova Scotian candidate. The African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker will contribute to the support of African Nova Scotian students to ensure improved achievement and a positive school experience. The Student Support Worker will develop strategies to help students achieve success, will support School Principals on initiatives which address student achievement for African Nova Scotian students, and work with School Principals and staff in developing effective communication links for African Nova Scotian youth and their families. Working collaboratively with the Regional Coordinator of African Canadian Education, principals and school staff, the Student Support Worker will demonstrate a strong commitment to facilitating student success. The Student Support Worker reports directly to the Regional Coordinator of African Canadian Education.

Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate degree in Social Sciences (i.e. Child Studies, Social Work, or Human Services), or equivalent through a combination of work experience, life skills training, and training in working with students;
  • Experience working with African Nova Scotian students and communities through approaches which enhance the greatness, strengths, and abilities of African Nova Scotian students;
  • Minimum three (3) years demonstrated experience providing targeted support to youth;
  • Experience with case management and / or record keeping considered an asset.
  • Rate of Pay :

    The starting annual salary is $41,268.32 paid across 12 months for working a 10-month school year. Student Support Workers are paid every two weeks. Salary is based on a six (6) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement as shown below.

    The annual salary for term positions less than a school year is pro-rated over the length of the term.

    Hours of Work :

    Seven (7) hours per day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
