Job description

Who We Are

Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

About the Role

4D LABS is a state-of-the-art Core Facility at Simon Fraser University (SFU), a top employer in BC and Canada. Materials Characterization Specialists join a strong technical team to provide scientific and technical support to a range of academic and industrial clients accessing the advanced characterization facilities within 4D LABS. They are responsible for the technical oversight of sophisticated laboratory tools used for research. Specific tool responsibilities will be determined based on the successful applicants’ skills and there are also opportunities to learn new equipment and skills and potentially attend conferences and training courses.

The Characterization Scientist will provide consultation to academic and industrial clients to assist with advanced analytical needs. The role also includes maintenance and troubleshooting of advanced characterization equipment. Specialists in 4D LABS enjoy working on cutting‑edge equipment with a diverse range of researchers at one of Canada’s leading comprehensive universities. You will set up, integrate, operate and maintain specialized research laboratory tools (e.g., SEM, TEM, XRD, XRF, and more).

You will provide specialized training to faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, and industrial clients on the proper and safe use of equipment to obtain desired results for their research purposes. You enjoy explaining technical and scientific concepts and procedures, helping design experiments, explaining complex theories, and help interpret data. Ensuring the safe operation of the equipment and facility is key.

You will be a skilled scientist who enjoys working with people, utilizing advanced tools, and a quick learner. There will be opportunities to grow in the position as you learn new capabilities and techniques. You enjoy teaching researchers new technologies and you have excellent communication skills. You will have strong organization skills and enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. Contributing to cutting‑edge research is something you value in your career.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related discipline.
  • Requires training on advanced characterization tools.
  • 3 years of minimum experience.
  • An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate / program of study and experience is acceptable.
