North Bay Indigenous Hub Social Worker

One (1) Permanent Full-Time Position (Comp #)

Salary Range $74000-$83000


The North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH) will provide a wide range of programming services including traditional healing primary care health promotion chronic disease management family-focused maternal/child health care mental wellness care diabetes care and a culturally integrated licensed day care facility. All of the programs are to be delivered in a culturally safe manner to the local urban Indigenous population in addition to our partner First Nations Nipissing Temagami and Dokis First Nations. This new Indigenous Primary Health Care team seeks a motivated self-starter who is passionate about positive health outcomes for Indigenous people.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH) this position will be responsible to assist in the delivery of culturally competent and safe health and patient care management as part of an inter-professional team at the North Bay Indigenous Hub (NBIH).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters level of education and professional membership an asset (MSW RSW preferred) or related education at a Masters level such as counselling or sociology combined with at least 5 years experience
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture values and history
  • Experience working within culturally appropriate service models for Indigenous people
  • Fluency in a traditional language is an asset
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Registered and in good standing with OCSWSSW and/or CRPO
  • High level of sound and independent judgment reasoning and discretion
  • Professional responsive and positive work attitude is essential
  • Demonstrated community work experience with families to improve wellness coping skills and empowerment in the following areas: poverty issues housing legal social assistance education family violence substance abuse assessment and treatment crisis intervention and mental health
  • Valid Class G Drivers License access to a reliable vehicle and insurance

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Indigenous theories and perspectives of Social Work practice
  • Demonstrated experience with Indigenous and western Social Work paradigms
  • Culture-specific skills and approaches particular to traditional helping with Indigenous peoples
  • In depth knowledge of Indigenous Social Determinants of Health
  • Role modelling wise practices in Indigenous wellness
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous community of North Bay and partner First Nations: Nipissing Dokis and Temagami First Nations
  • Ability to communicate information effectively through a variety of means including meetings emails reports letters and presentations
  • Highly organized ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting families to improve wellness achieve stability and increase resilience
  • Ability to share learning and lived experiences to build capacity in the Primary Care team
  • Appreciation and respect for peer services on the Primary Care team
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively on an interdisciplinary team
  • High level of sound and independent judgment reasoning and discretion in accordance with NBIH policies and procedures and standards of practice set forth by the Ontario College of Social Workers Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRP0)
  • Ability to work with diverse Indigenous groups and elements of their cultures including Indigenous spirituality physical activity and healing methodology
  • Public Speaking
  • Computer skills (Word Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with electronic medical records is an asset
  • Some training and certification in palliative care bereavement grief and loss mental health and substance abuse screening relationship violence screening crisis intervention/assessment counselling techniques trauma/abuse life skills and supporting people living with disabilities
  • Maintains professional competence and knowledge of current practices by participating in professional development and clinical supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in completing advocacy letters and writing reports and proposals
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the Child and Family Services Act
  • Adherence and working knowledge of Personal Health Information Privacy Act (PHIPA)
  • Ability to work in a kind supportive manner with Indigenous people and families
  • Cultural Safety Training or willingness to obtain upon employment

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and carry out counselling and intervention service delivery in accord with Indigenous and western Social Work paradigms and practices
  • Participation in regular Primary Care meetings and in ongoing staff development and training sessions
  • Active team player and contributor towards NBIH goals in enabling positive outcomes for our community
  • Assist staff and partnering agencies/communities in understanding the cultural perspectives of health care and illness
  • Provide traditional and western education sessions to clients and staff on wellness addictions support and the promotion of wellness and the prevention of illness
  • Make referrals to other practitioners and/or health care staff for complex traditional therapies and or other health care services
  • Liaise and advocate for clients as warranted and facilitates connections between clients and community supports in order to assist clients in accessing required resources
  • Ensure documentation of all patient care services into appropriate medical records as per NBIH policies and procedures
  • Screening assessing providing referrals and scheduling Social Work appointments
  • Partner to integrate and reinforce concepts of wholistic health from an Indigenous perspective
  • Foster a positive environment through direct consultation with our primary care team including Traditional and Clinical Services
  • Assist clients with applications for community support services and programs
  • Provide evidence-based treatment practices to a diverse core population including Ojibwa/Chippewa (Anishinaabe) Cree and Haudenosaunee Nations (Oneida Mohawk Seneca Tuscarora Cayuga Onondaga)
  • Facilitate one-to-one family or group counselling and treatment sessions
  • Act as a professional and knowledgeable role model or mentor to colleagues and students
  • Create and administer client/participant evaluation forms to ensure community input is incorporated into our service
  • Advocate on behalf of the community members with regard to equitable access to health services
  • Maintain a current list of local resources available in the community and in our partner First Nations
  • Must be willing to travel to our partner First Nations
