Duties

Navigation Instructors train Officer Cadets and Operational Personnel in the knowledge and skills required of a Ship’s Officer. This is done through classroom lectures, practical exercises and evaluations. In addition to traditional face to face classroom activities, instructors may be required to deliver distance learning courses using the Coast Guard’s Learning Management System.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

This position is in Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is necessary for Instructors to physically work at the Canadian Coast Guard College (CCGC).

Intent of the process

The Canadian Coast Guard College is interested in the recruitment and retention of qualified individuals who are seeking a challenge that includes the modernization of teaching practices to personnel in an operational environment. A pool of qualified candidates will be created and may be used to staff similar permanent and temporary positions.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION :

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and / or experience.

Successful completion of acceptable specialized training related to the position.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION :

Transport Canada Certificate of Competency - Master Near Coastal.

  • Chief Mate - Near Coastal certificate may be accepted for temporary positions.

EXPERIENCE :

Experience as an officer in charge of a navigational watch at sea.

ASSET EDUCATION :

Recognized training in adult education.

Graduation from a recognized nautical institution.

ASSET CERTIFICATION :

Transport Canada Certificate of Competency – Master Mariner.

ASSET EXPERIENCE :

Experience as Commanding Officer or Chief Officer.

Experience as a Ship’s Officer on Canadian Coast Guard Vessels.

Experience teaching in the field of maritime navigation.

Various language requirements

English Essential, French Essential, Bilingual Imperative BBB / BBB or CBC / CBC.

KNOWLEDGE :
