Job description

Position Summary

Based at our 400 Fenmar Drive, North York facility, the Process Engineer will lead continuous improvement initiatives, optimize manufacturing processes, and support the integration of new materials and technologies within our extrusion and recycling operations. Proactive and detail-oriented, the ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience in plastics and rubber manufacturing, with strong technical knowledge of extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, or blow molding. This role focuses on enhancing production efficiency, improving product quality, reducing cycle times, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.

Essential Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Analyze and optimize manufacturing processes related to plastic and rubber molding, extrusion, compounding, and/or calendaring operations.
  • Troubleshoot process issues to minimize downtime and scrap and implement root cause corrective actions (RCCA).
  • Develop and maintain process documentation including work instructions, process flow diagrams, setup sheets, and PFMEAs.
  • Support new product development and scale‑up by establishing and validating robust manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (Production, Quality, Maintenance, R&D) to ensure process efficiency and product quality.
  • Implement Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, or Six Sigma methodologies to eliminate waste and improve productivity.
  • Evaluate new materials, tooling, and equipment to improve product performance and reduce costs.
  • Monitor key process parameters and conduct statistical analysis (SPC/SQC) for process control.
  • Ensure all processes comply with ISO 9001, IATF 16949 (if automotive), FDA (if applicable), and relevant environmental and safety regulations.
  • Train operators and technicians in process best practices and new technologies.
  • Support and/or lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Bring forward recommendations and insights to continually improve processes.
  • Conduct all work duties in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations, the Health, Safety, Environmental policies, and Quality policies as established by Multy Home.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a process engineering role within plastics or rubber manufacturing.
  • Hands‑on experience with injection molding, extrusion, compression molding, thermoforming, or blow molding processes.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and familiarity with root cause analysis tools (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA).
  • Knowledge of polymer materials, additives, rheology, and thermal properties.
  • Proficient in process monitoring and simulation tools (e.g., Minitab, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Moldflow – if applicable).
  • Understanding of automation systems, sensors, and controls is a plus.
  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.

Physical Working Environment

Setting:

  • Mix of manufacturing floor (60–70%) and office/engineering work (30–40%).
  • The plant operates Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend or shift support required during product launches or issue resolution.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and work in a production environment for extended periods.
  • May require lifting (up to 25 kg), bending, and working near hot or noisy machinery.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.

Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to heat, noise, dust, and strong odors typical of plastics and rubber manufacturing.
  • Must follow all Ministry of Labour safety protocols and participate in workplace safety training.

Travel

  • Occasional travel to vendors or other facilities within Ontario or across Canada (less than 10%).

Technical Skills

Manufacturing Processes

  • Hands‑on experience with:
  • Extrusion (Profile, Sheet, or Film)
  • Rubber Compression and Transfer Molding
  • Thermoforming / Blow Molding (optional)

Materials & Polymers

  • Knowledge of thermoplastics (e.g., PP, PE, ABS, PVC) and elastomers (e.g., EPDM, NR, SBR, NBR, Silicone).
  • Understanding of polymer behavior, rheology, curing cycles, and additive usage.

Software & Tools

  • AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar for tooling and layout design.
  • Moldflow, Sigmasoft, or other simulation tools (preferred).
  • ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) and MES software for process tracking.
  • Data analysis tools: Excel (advanced), Minitab, JMP for SPC, DOE, and capability studies.

Quality & Improvement Methodologies

  • FMEA, 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram, DMAIC
  • ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and/or GMP (if applicable)
