What will you be doing!

  • Completing training, mentoring, and apprenticing work with Industrial Hygienist (IH) staff and completing continuous quality monitoring of work practices of IH staff and ensuring appropriate quality and consistency.
  • Consulting with Industrial Hygiene Central Services, developing, revising and implementing industrial hygiene programs, procedures and instructions within Environmental Remediation Management (ERM).
  • Identifying and evaluating methods to control hazards, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.
  • Providing technical support and subject matter expertise to project planning teams and field operations for ERM projects.
  • Conducting industrial hygiene audits and site assessments.
  • Developing sampling plans for noise, biological, and chemical substances.
  • Conducting industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert within the ERM Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) team.
  • Identifying gaps between current ERM practices and company programs, procedures, regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices related to Industrial Hygiene issues.
  • Attending designated meetings and working with a diverse group of internal and external clients.
  • Providing program oversight and input for continuous improvement assessment.
  • Providing IH leadership oversight of work to ensure it complies with IH obligations and work-specific documents and procedures.
  • Providing IH support to the project by maintaining a visible presence in the field, performing regular site visits.
  • Assisting in the coaching, mentoring and implementation of the IH programs in the field, assisting project teams and contractors as needed through coaching, mentoring, and relationship building.
  • Regularly reviewing and familiarizing with all applicable legislation and applicable standards, ensuring compliance.
  • Proactively recognizing and encouraging positive workplace IH practices, and maintaining compliance with program and legislative requirements through project delivery personnel and contractors.
  • Providing expertise, supporting and assisting in developing, reviewing, implementing and monitoring of task and project-specific IH programs, work-plans, risk registers, and management system components. Providing IH subject matter expert (SME) support to the project by maintaining a visible presence in the field, performing site visits to the entire project.
  • Providing timely customer service with credible and expert responses to support requests.
  • Utilizing subject matter expertise to complete tasks or comprehensive project risk assessments, hazard assessments, and developing safety work procedures in support of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL)’s Integrated Work Control program and Engineering Change Control programs when required.
  • Documenting observations pertaining to work oversight activities, including entering/transcribing oversight information in CNL’s various recordkeeping and information management systems according to established requirements.
  • Supporting CNL to help improve OHS program and practices through self-generated improvement initiatives and participation in developing and/or updating CNL-wide corporate procedures and standards.
  • Following CNL’s Information Protection policy and maintaining discretion and confidentiality when applicable.
  • Directing, implementing and monitoring required engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment and respirators, eliminating or reducing physical, biological and chemical exposures.
  • Providing line managers and employees with survey reports indicating the results, field observations and recommendations (control measures, personal protective equipment (PPE), and respiratory protection needs if relevant).
  • Analyzing and interpreting IH monitoring data, work plans, and reports in order to access necessary controls and take further action.
  • Providing additional support to ERM facilities on IH-related matters as required.
  • Liaise with ERM internal customers and contractors to ensure IH needs are addressed and met.
  • Supporting the implementation of CNL and ERM IH policies, programs and procedures.
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets, chemical Inventories and exposure databases.
  • Developing communications, conducting training sessions and delivering presentations on IH-related subjects.
  • Supporting Integrated Work Control, including Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), risk reviews, work plans and permits.
  • Serving as the IH SME for designated topics.
  • Participating in inspections, audits and program reviews.
  • Compiling summary information for internal reports.
  • Conducting research as assigned.
  • Collaborating effectively with other IH and OSH personnel.
  • Participating in internal and external training courses as required
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education Minimum Honours Bachelor’s Science Degree, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Degree or related disciplines such as Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or Applied Science from a university of recognized standing. Membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) designation. Or if no designation, then must be capable and willing to obtain within a reasonable period of time.
  • Experience Minimum of six years of experience in industrial hygiene, preferably in environmental remediation, nuclear or chemical sectors.Experience in developing occupational health and industrial hygiene programs and procedures.Familiar with IH laboratory analysis and direct reading instruments.Demonstrated ability to write technical reports.Good work ethic and dedication to workplace health and safety.Demonstrated interpersonal skills in order to work well within integrated project teams on ERM projects.
  • Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesGood understanding of occupational health and safety legislation in both federal and provincial jurisdictions.Advanced level of computer skills desired with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).Ability to coach, mentor, train and develop personnel on IH practices.Ability to assess conflict and handle complex people and situational dynamics.Excellent interpersonal communication skills – written and oral - and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.Outstanding organizational skills, with high attention to detail and ability to tailor communications to mixed audiences.Outstanding relationship management, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.Exceptional ability to solve problems through soft and hard analytical skills.Ability to work with applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.Understands and can interpret statistics and performance metrics.Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deliverables and task pressures.Ability to adapt to a changing environment and respond with initiative.Ability to provide prompt, clear and concise guidance as required.Tactful and diplomatic, able to work effectively with employees, contractors and line management.Ability to present recommendations, complete regulatory reporting and technical writing clearly and effectively.Ability to effectively handle and diffuse difficult situations in real time with internal and external clients.Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, punctual and dependable.Ability to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.Ability to adapt to a changing environment and response with initiative;
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required

    Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day work week and ten hours a day, starting at 6 am.
  • Ability to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.
  • Must be willing to undertake and successfully complete various CNL internal training programs relevant to this position.
  • Field presence is required in all weather conditions, with flexible time availability to work extended hours when required.
